The UK's bleakest railway station competition

Lympstone Commando Station

I vote for duddeston or wolverton.

Duddeston is depressing - two lines passing through several derelict platforms and empty gantries for the overhead wires. It's a reminder of how much of the railway's been abandoned over the years.

Eridge, in Sussex, is similar. It was once a busy, if isolated, junction, with four platforms. Now it's rather run-down, with one platform in use and the buildings all sealed up.

At least it's been given a coat of paint since this picture was taken...

Easily that Severn Tunnel Junction one. I used to have to change trains there and a bleaker, more souless place I have never been.

At least it has an exciting name - you could imagine all those burly blokes in their uniform getting off there for the barracks.....

Well I can anyway.
They wouldn't just get off the train. They'd do forward rolls into the nearest bushes.

I notice there are no signals.

What do the drivers do? Just guess?

Once the trains leave the mainline at Helensburgh they are controlled by radio signals from a central location near Fort William. Most stations on the line have the facility to allow trains to pass each other.

Gypsy Lane on the Whitby line is fairly bleak.

Severn Tunnel is about to be done up ! (cold though)

Tolworth is quasi art deco ....

Dovey Junction has some wonderfull Welsh views - but watch the path to the main road in Summer - an adder haunt !

And don't ever bank on the last train from Blackpool South to Preston ever showing up - twice in the last 2 years (and I;ve only done the trip 3 times) the bastard never came

I can't find a picture of Swale Station, on the Sittingbourne - Sheerness line, but iirc it's prolly pretty bleak and has the distinction of going to Sheerness which suggests an element of bleakness in itself...

For a slightly different definition of 'bleak' here's the now-defunct Princetown Station:

It may look nice in the picture, but in times past this was the station you would have arrived at if you were headed for a stretch in Dartmoor Prison.

A bleak thought indeed, methinks.

Carnforth used to be bleak despite it's film star history.....it must have once been grand....now you change for the Barrow trains. The trains carrying nuclear waste to Sellafield used to squeak their way through now and again to give atmosphere

I've walked some of that route with the urban75 walk crew. In the pouring rain.

Yep, that'd be Dartmoor all right. There's an old local saying that 'Dartmoor is three months winter and nine months rain.' It amazing when the sun does actually put in an appearance, though.

Did you get a good look at the prison at all? It's a very popular place for tourists to come and have a look at, from a distance obviously. It's every bit as much fun on the inside as it is to look at, I'm reliably informed.
