The UK Office

I'm suddenly reminded of the time BBC News correspondent, Lizo Mzimba, refered to Strictly Come Dancing as "the UK version of Dancing with the Stars" :hmm:

Although it feels pretty dated now, I still say it's way better than the US office, which I had to sit through vitrually every episode as the OH was obsessed with it.

My main issue with the US office was that I really related to the UK office, where virtually the whole supporting cast played it straight (except Brent, Gareth and to a lesser extent, Finchy/Keith). It was well observed, awkward, and fucking funny.

In the US office, virtually the ENTIRE cast was made into these hyper-unfunny sub-SNL characatures. And the only straights were Jim and Pam. It was just too OTT. It had it's moments - mostly thanks to Carell playing Michael Scott so well. But other than him, I just couldn't get into it.

When the UK one first came on TV I thought it was great, I do remember watching one episode with my dad and him hating it saying he didn't want to watch a show about a load of bullies. I thought he was wrong then but now I see where he was coming from - the UK version was just a depressing series of people being cunts to each other. If you want cheering up probably best not to watch it.

I much prefer the US version and no it's not as realistic but that's one of the things I like about it.

The US version was (after the first few episodes) played as a straight forward sitcom. And did it pretty well for several seasons.

I think that was the problem I had with it. It was a sitcom. And despite its popularity, I didn't find it all that funny.

I'm on s07 of the US Office at the moment. It's better than the UK one but for different reasons. Mainly, Steve Carrel being fucking hilarious throughout. There are other very good characters in it too like Kevin and Andy Bernard. Meredith makes me laugh too and Dwight can be hilarious a lot of the time. I also really love the way Michael treats Toby.

The funniest bits were usually before the opening credits iirc.

Dwight's fire drill.

Michael, Dwight and Andy doing parkour.

I've just been watching it all for the first time... I was probably too stuck up to watch it at the time. It's briliant! I think it's aged well...though what's interesting is it was clearly made 'of a time' - and I figure people wouldn't act like that quite the same in offices now...

Best comedy ever made IMO. Certainly haven’t seen anything as good since it aired.
