The Straight to DVD Dungeon

...i think im right in saying that on occassion theres also a lot of dodgy money that gets put up to make films, and they really dont care if it makes a return or not
Even with legitimate funding, I think some investors are not interested in a return and can invest for other reasons such as schemes to reduce taxable income.

Isn't that basically what Uwe Boll does? Takes money from rich Germans to make a loss-making turkey so that they can reduce their tax bills? Basically a real life Producers kinda scam.

I have only watched one so far
The Mangler 2: Graduation Day is a 'sequel' to Tobe Hooper's adaptation of the excellent Stephen King short story.
I haven't seen it, but this doesn't matter as this is a sequel in name only. While The Mangler was about a possessed and murderous laundry machine, this film is about a murderous computer virus let loose on a school with the oldest teenagers in the world, a comedy French chef with a cig permanently glued to his lip, and the headmaster, Lance Henriksen.
It looks like they spunked all the budget on Lance Henriksen cos it's not in evidence in the sets or the special effects.
It's not even gory, with most deaths happening offscreen and it doesn't even have any boobs in it, so it pretty much fails on every level. There are a few unintentional laughs, mainly from the appalling script, but also from the scene in which Lance Henriksen gets possessed and becomed half=machine with wires sticking out of him.
The plot isn't even original, as they nicked it off another execrable King adaptation, The Lawnmower Man.
So bad, it's bad.

a few years ago we bought a load of £1 horror DVDs from brixton poundstretcher. ideal viewing when you're mangled.

That looks pretty good, actually.

I see Paul Sorvino is in the credits, Didn't he go on to be on the Sopranos or something? And be Mira Sorvino's da (what became of her, anyway?)

Mira Sorvino went to the wrong side of 40, which is when Hollywood replaces all actresses who aren't Meryl Streep with younger models. They end up making Lifetime Movies and guest appearances in TV series.

The Stuff isn't quite as much fun as it should be, but it's OK. It's one of the lesser films by Larry Cohen who was a bit of a exploitation movie maverick in the 70s and 80s. He made the It's Alive! killer baby films and Q: The Flying Serpent, which is as if John Cassavetes had directed a Ray Harryhausen monster movie (with extra tits and gore). He liked and cast good character actors and he wrote them parts which were a bit better than what you'd expect in these type of films.

You don't say!

Wasn't it Q the Winged Serpent? Like you say, an underrated gem. I think I first saw it in that Alex Cox Moviedrome slot.

Anything where Jurgen Crocthnow turns up with his grim visage is bound to be a b-movie classic

He would have made a good Dredd.
I think he was actually in the first one, wasn't he?
Edit: Jurgen Prochnow, not David Warner

I enjoyed Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, featuring a very young Billy Bob Thornton.

The excellent David Warner spent years appearing in trash like this.

Yes he did, and I love him all the more for it. Waxwork ftw.

Fond memories of wandering the cheap'n'shitty aisles at my local video shop...I would purposely rent the worst, crappiest looking films I could find and watch them with glee.

:hmm:
A Boy and His Dog (1075)

Plot: A post-apocalyptic tale based on a novella by Harlan Ellison. A boy communicates telepathically with his dog as they scavenge for food and sex - rape tbh - eventually they stumble into an underground society where the old society is preserved. The daughter of one of the leaders of the community seduces and lures him below, where the citizens have become unable to reproduce because of being underground so long. They use him for impregnation purposes, and then plan to be rid of him.

Not a Straight to DVD movie, a stone cold 70s Sci Fi Classic.

Just watched The Manson Family, high exploitation but rather dull and not much of an insight into the mind of Manson. Not that it was ever going to be.
Tits and stabbings, that's all.

This is what I shall be ploughing through:
