The self-indulgent all-time WC XI thread

Because I like doing this kind of thing, and thinking about who would play well together, rather than just putting just the glamour players together.

It can be all-time, or just what you can remember seeing. I'm choosing the latter, so starting from 1994. I was around for 1986 and 1990, but I don't remember them, so no Maradona, Lineker, Platini, Rummenigge, etc.

Buffon

Thuram - Cannavaro - Pique - Maldini

Schweinsteiger - Pirlo - Iniesta

Müller - Klose - Baggio

Loads of different ways to pick best of teams, so I'm going to go for only players that have won the World Cup since I've been watching them (1982 was my first).

Zoff

Cafu Scirea Puyol Lizerazu

Matthaus Deschamps

Iniesta Zidane Maradona

Ronaldo

Beat that!

Oh go on then. I may be older than some of you.

Zoff

Danny McGrain (never lost a world cup game)
Beckenbauer
Maldini
Breitner (for Mao's little red book)

Zidane
Maradona
Rivellino

Jairzinho
Pele
Cruyff

Subs - Arie Haan (for when Maradona or Zidane gets sent off)
Messi
CR7 (just so he has to sit on a bench with Messi, and not get brought on)

PS I am well aware there are several reasons this team wouldn't 'gel'. That's not my criteria.

Zidane
Maradona
Rivellino

Jairzinho
Pele
Cruyff

Going defensive then?

Right back was my hardest decision, as Thuram, Cafu and Lahm all have pretty much equal claim. Thuram got it on account of being world class in two positions.

I realised that my team is entirely European. My squad would have Cafu, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Riquelme and Batistuta.

Lahm was world class in three
