Is this the best WC so far in a generation?

Wasn't there a recent tournament where it was generally agreed to be on the dull side: particularly the group stage? Can't remember if it was the last Euros or World Cup.

2010 World Cup in South Africa. I thought it was dreadful. The main talking point of the tournament were those bloody vuvuzelas and the best match of the tournament was the final, largely due to the fact that Holland's tactics against Spain was to kick the shit out the midfield to stop them passing.

What you lot seem to have forgotten, and is the major blot on this WC, is that Russia bribed for it in the first place and we wuz robbed. This is the WC that should have been in England!!

This is why I hope Spain totally thrash Russia. Totally corrupt.

The football is good and has been very entertaining, of course nothing except a competition win is ever going to beat Italia '90, even the BBC theme tune was awesome, but they flipping stole this one from us.

Don't know how anybody can classify this as "the best World Cup" in any timeframe but the last 4 years. How many goals were the result of set pieces? How many penalties? The goals out of free play are probably at an all time low. Instead most of the teams seem to waste about 10 minutes per match with complaining to the referee and/or waiting for the VAR. I've seen people describing it as a tournament of penalty shootouts, with a little bit of football in between, and that pretty much nails it.

Best world cup since 1938 (except for 1966) #OutInGroupStage

It's certainly the best world cup this year

This is the world cup we would have had if only Prince William hadn't pissed away the bribe money

Five days since the last post ITT, and after the games at the weekend and what’s happened just now between Belgium and Japan, i’d say this WC is starting to pull apart from any competitors in the last two or three decades.

Loving every minute of it (well, apart from the 3 pm match yesterday :D).

ETA: a telling stat on the Beeb:
  • There have now been nine 90th-minute winning goals in the 2018 World Cup. There were just 10 in the previous five tournaments combined.

otzenpunk : Did you really write this during the second half of of the Germany vs S.Korea game?

Can't agree about the VAR either. After years of watching the likes of Klinsmann diving his way to World Cup titles, I wish they'd have introduced it earlier.
Maybe why some of the "big names" aren't providing the goods this time around.

Totally agree. It's been far from perfect, but it is only a good thing, imo. Next up will be to crack down on the play-acting. It'll come. There's no need to play football like Neymar did this afternoon. Japan and Belgium showed a totally different way to play - and not just them tbf, loads of other teams have shown it as well.

Agreed. VAR is great and has made everything so much fairer. Slight delays are a price worth paying and amount to not a lot in the grand scheme of things

So far this is more enjoyable than Brazil, South Africa, and France. Japan/S.Korea was excellent and on a par.

Special nod to USA '94, with all of England supporting Ireland. Jackie Charlton losing it. A bemused USA. Diana Ross's mis-kick. One of the most bizarre ones.
