The rise and fall of messaging apps

Isn't it just a way to push people towards using mobile data rather than or in addition to text and call?
 
I do use whatsapp but only for contacting individuals or if I want to call someone from my bedroom as I have shite reception there. i don't really do gossippy group threads (not that I've ever been added to one), though we do have a family one since covid for sharing photos, but no real chat. I have recently been encouraged to drop it for security purposes. Have installed Telegram but haven't used it yet. I have used briefly, and then uninstalled, Signal, as I found it very unreliable with messages taking ages to send/arrive
 
For some reason our teacher trainee discussion group has been set up on discord, which is shite. The group is a total graveyard as a result.

Discord works ok and has unlimited video/audio chat time for free.
Been used for years by gamers

And it's kind of nice that you don't have to sell your soul (and your data) to the corporatocracy, as with WhatsApp or indeed most of the rest of the conferencing solutions.
