The Pipe Organ Thread

Youtube threw up this tourist phone video at me
seems there is a rich tradition of frightening (unimpressing more accurately) small children at Notre Dame with organ improv!

Which lead me to look into it a little. Olivier Latry seems to be the improv king of France these days

And the organ version of Messiaen's - L'Ascension (1932) is supposedly the work that kind of set the whole tradition off (though not sure why, presumably there is no improv in it...or is there? i havent listened yet)

(ETA: this is uneasy unpleasant listening...reminiscent of the Blakes 7 soundtrack in a lot of places!!)

Thats as far as I've got. I cant find a good beginners article to the tradition

The church in Tirano has a magnificent organ

"The sanctuary is multifaceted for the presence of the works of art that adorn it: on the facade stands out the portal of the sculptor Alessandro Della Scala da Carona, while inside there is an organ of fine workmanship, made between 1608 and 1617 by Brescian Giuseppe Bulgarini.[[4][[8] The peculiarity of this organ is its truly monumental aspect in the complex of the church, since it rests on eight large columns of red marble and anciently.from 1650 depicting the Coronation of the Virgin.[[4][[8]"
