The Malvern Hills

I stayed in the Green Dragon about 20 years ago - the time team crew/cast were staying there at the same time: Tony Robinson ate breakfast at a separate table to all the rest, and that ginger bloke with the hat was still utterly minging in the morning.

#wow! #propercelebs #papped
Why did TR eat on a separate table?

Why did TR eat on a separate table?

he was just sat at a small, two seat table (on his tod) away from the rest of the cast/crew who were on a series of large tables that were all next to each other. he didn't interact with them and they didn't interact with him.

Hotel booked. It's the Royal Wales show next week and we won't be able to make it :(
I hope/suspect a walk up on the Malverns Sunday.

You can ask a_chap if you can borrow Lilly for the morning...

There's a couple of outfits that can do you a half days canoeing on the Wye around Hereford. Very pleasant.

Well we never made it to The Malverns so we is headed back at beginning of August. Plan is to stay in Ledbury which looks great and perfect for heading up in to the hills.
SV railway is on the cards as is Coughton Court and Worcester ( with it's cathedral and two medical museums ).
a_chap is Lilly ok and available?

What have I overlooked? Any advice on pubs and places to eat?

cheers.

The Cathedral in Worcester is very interesting, I think I've been to Coughton Court too but it was a long time ago!

The Royal Worcester Porcelain museum is interesting if you like that sort of thing..

It was possible to have a tour of the factory many years ago which was great to watch how things were made and see staff hand painting stuff but it looks like the factory building is an event space now - I guess because they are now part of the Portmeirion Group, which I didn't know til just now.

I can't help you with the pubs I'm afraid :D

Will pass on the porcelain thanks; only did Wedgewood a week or two back.

Not sure Lily is quite up to a full walk on the hills, she's getting a bit long in the tooth these days.

As for suggestions, I don't know the kinds of things you're interested in so they're a bit hard to offer.

Malvern is home to Morgan Cars. You can book a trip around the factory or even hire a car for an hour.

Obviously there's Elgar. There are various "Elgar routes" you can follow. I never have. Google's your friend there.

Ledbury's close to Much Marcle, so you could do a trip to Weston's cider for a tour and/or a meal.

Loads of antique shops in Ledbury, Upton upon Severn, Great Malvern, Tewkesbury and even Worcester or Hereford!

Feed the swans - LOTS of them - on the Severn. The tend to congregate near the cathedral.

If you like curries, you'll be spoiled for choice in Malven.

As for pubs on the hills themselves, we've only been to the Malvern Hills Hotel and the Wyche Inn. Both we've happily returned to many times.

If it t'were me, I'd do Ledbury, Malvern, Ross and Tewkesbury - SVR is great, really good fun, but I'd probably start from Bewdley (best pubs are the Mug House, Pack Horse, Polmoderos for an Italian, or a decent Spoons (the George) rather than Kiddy, and go up to Bridgnorth. There's a market on Saturdays, but the Cliff Railway (funicular thing) is still closed and is unlikely to reopen this summer.

Ludlow is always a good shout in the summer - markets on most days, best pubs are the Rose and Crown, the Church, the Boar, and the Unicorn.

Worcesters always nice for a mooch - cathedral is superb, fair bit of shopping (better than Hereford I think), there's a nice texmex called Chester's, or a couple of Turkish and Persian places in Reindeer Court.

If you go to Hereford, the bunch of Carrots is superb, the Eagle and Serpent does nice food in a lovely courtyard, and the Orange Tree is great. The cathedral is great, as the cathedral quarter, with some superb pubs/eateries, and nice shops.

Morgan's is a great idea. We went to the Much Marcle steam fair when we stayed in Hereford last time, loved it.
As for long in the tooth I'm not exactly in the first flush of youth but really want to get out on the hills. I'll check Morgan out at work later.

We used to go to Chesters A LOT as it used to do a fantastic selection of veggie and vegan food. But it's dropped right off.

The last time I went (admittedly a couple of Christmasses ago) the menu was a pale shadow of its former self :(

I've checked the website and there is no mention of cost; any idea? Very tempted by a spin in a 3 wheeler.

Go to Experience Morgan - Morgan Motor Company and click the "Discover more" buttons. Then you have to click "Pick a date" to see the relevant prices.

Edited to add: you might want to visit the Severn Fish Pass

Disclaimer: I haven't been there myself yet, but fully intend to.

This looks just the ticket End to End - Visit The Malverns
The problem is if I start at Chase End, how do I get back there, other than walking; I think that would be a bit much.
I know we can get to where we are staying in Ledbury by train from Malvern easily and we will certainly be taking a
day out in Malvern by train.

Depending on which day it is some kind Urbanite might offer to meet up, have a pint and give you a life back...

Edited to add: LIFT back. Lift. Not life...
