The Dark Crystal

ive got the original on dvd and it i think its really good. the old witch women/thing Aughra is ace and the skecksies are marvelous badies. My kids (4 and 6) really like it.

I've never seen the original, I don't think. For nostagia viewers only?

Looks garbage from the trailer, but...trailers are shite in general.

Worth a watch as a newbie?

I watched it for the first time last year after my sister kept harping on about it, expecting it to be shit from an adult first timer perspective but it was actually pretty decent. A solid 7/10. From me at least. It seemed pretty dark excuse the pun for kids of even today and is probably a better understood story as an adult.

It's on UK Netflix now - I watched some last night.

I'm happy that they've kept the intricate and slightly clumsy puppetry for all the characters and close scenes, even if I suspect there's a lot of CGI in the epic backgrounds. The gelflings' facial expressions still look wooden because they literally are. These are plus points.

The skeksis are great villains, lots of character and individuality, but the heroes are all wet and boring so far, and the plot is taking forever because this is fucking Netflix and that's what happens. So I dunno how much I will actually watch. Last year I said:

I think we can be fairly sure that it will look gorgeous (it has a lot of legacy to live up to, more from the influence it had than just the original film itself, and people will be queuing up to work on it) and will have a bog standard fantasy quest plot. Because it’s a Netflix series it will also sag in the middle entirely avoidably and people will somehow be surprised by this.

Beyond that, its possible that it might do it all well, with sharp dialogue and good characters and well written scenes. It might also do it in a very pedestrian way. But I don’t think it will be worse than the original.
It looks gorgeous and it has a bog standard fantasy quest plot and it's already sagging. The dialogue is not sharp and some of the characters are interesting but not the heroes, but that may change.

Netflix has been pushing this at me. It didn’t look at all like something I’d like. (Fantasy is very much not my thing). But I spotted this thread and noticed there’d been a film. That had completely passed me by. So I duckduckgoed it and see it was a Jim Henson film. I like the Muppets.

Is it funny?

Liked it A LOT as a kid when I saw it at the cinema. Utterly unwatchable bullshit as an adult.
My brother tried to watch it with my 12 year old for nostalgia reasons last week (and in preparation for the new series). They both hated it.

The main target audience seems to be puppeteers.

Followed by kids who won't understand what the hell is going on.

Followed by adults that want to force said kids to watch something they are nostalgic about.

About the only thing I really liked about it was the Podling Paladin.

If you like Lord of the Rings I reckon you'll like it.

It's a wonderful series and looks better than most cgi stuff as the puppets are actually real, in the main. It is funny, scary, horrifying and moving, which isn't a bad thing. I love it.
