Thank You Games Makers

Anyway, no Olympics next year, so maybe in 2013 the gamesmakers could all get together, cut out the middleman and just directly build Nick Buckles a swimming pool.

That is de facto what she did. The fact that she didn't perceive it as such is irrelevant.

She de facto volunteered to wear purple. She de facto volunteered to assist someone who might be a nazi find the northern line. She volunteered to be a games maker at the London Olympics for her reasons, not yours. Every time YOU make a phone call, have a shit, buy a banana, accept a job, whatever you are 'de facto' helping the rich or contributing to something else of which you or others disapprove. You're the one being irrelevant wrt the subject of this thread.

(a) I didn't say they volunteered because they wanted to make private companies richer. I said that was what they, in fact, did.
and (b) Allowed? Where is this allowed coming in? I just didn't think they deserved praise or thanks for it.

That's ok. No one is forcing you to thank them. There is a whole world out there outside this thread. Some of it devoted to discussions about what a lot of cunts G4S etc are.

Lots of people do feel thankful to ordinary humans in their role as game makers though and found how they conducted themselves praiseworthily.

With great justification. The Olympics have been a model of how the big society is intended to work - volunteers doing work that should be paid, private companies pocketing the profits.

Yes we know that. From reading all the other posts about it and even  complaining about it ourselves. Or are you under the impression you are enlightening people?

The difference with these volunteers is that they weren't bullying, thugish jobsworths, which is what you'd have probably got if they'd been paid

Nah you'd of got totally disinterested and very bored temps. Sad but true, at least the volunteers wanted to be there.

Once again, your reading comprehension leaves a lot to be desired. And your attitude and apparent lack of humanity.
Nothing wrong with my comprehension, no ambiguity in the title "Thank You Games Makers" (as you wipe a tear from your eye, no doubt). I mean, ffs, do you work for LOCOG or something? Love the Olympic Spirit (TM) or you lack humanity!

Did I ask anyone else to thank them? Does the title ask others to thank them? I shared a video that I enjoyed for others to maybe enjoy too and thanked the games makers. That is all. As I say, your reading comprehension is sorely lacking.

One can not enjoy the Olympics and have humanity. My issue isn't that you don't like the Olympics, it's that you choose to disparage and sneer at others.

You do realise this is a discussion forum, right? When you post things on here you are asking people to agree or disagree with your opinion. That's the whole point of it.

It's not that I don't enjoy the Olympics. I like and enjoy sport, I even enjoyed some of the sporting events in this Olympics. I hate and have hated for a long time both the Olympic Committee (for a long history of crimes, including support for fascism, racism, dictatorships, among other things) and the ideological concept of the Olympic Spirit (which has been put toward propping up the horrific things mentioned earlier). I despise the people who organised it and their insistence that we should all drop everything and get behind their giant exercise in private profiteering and global grandstanding. Not forgiving them for all that all comes from MY sense of humanity. Now, none of that is the Games' Makers fault, and I'm sure they're all very well-meaning. But I'm fucked if I see why anyone should be thanking them for it.

It's a bit much to claim that the volunteers would otherwise have been replaced by paid staff. In fact, there just wouldn't have been umpteen purple-coated smiley sorts hanging around tube stations. No way would a commercial operation have paid for that many people.

On the other hand I am very sympathetic to the idea that people shouldn't work for free for profit-making companies. No, stop it. Just don't.

you know what. Fuck it, it's not worth it. The Games can fuck off to Brazil and displace a few hundred thousand people, and the Brazilian Maltin's of the world can go off on one about we're all a global family and everything's brilliant.

I know for a fact there were volunteers doing jobs (like performing at the opening ceremony) for free that had originally been slated for payment. And I wouldn't have objected to the volunteers if certain people weren't making a mint out of the whole thing. I actually saw someone using the Games Makers as a stick to bash the public transport workers for getting a bonus the other and all...

Me too. Were they working for a profit-making company? I don't know. If there were not sufficient volunteers I expect they would have had fewer of them, or maybe draft in people paid by the public purse somehow (more army? public servants in exchange for toil?), or lovely, lovely workfare.

For a lot of people (as seen on here) there would be a tension between knowing there are a lot of tax dodging grasping cunts exploiting the 'spirit' of the Olympics same as they exploit everything else they can get their grasping cunty hands on and wanting the athletes and other visitors to find a helpful people and a pleasant city, as well as having the chance to take part in a huge event like this and enjoy that for themselves.

I can thank a good teacher even if Gove is an odious little shit, or the school is an academy. I don't think ''why should I thank her, academies are a shit idea''.

I chose to thank them publicly. I didn't ask others to thank them or to ask if people agreed or disagreed with my post but they are free do so if they wish seeing as it a public forum. I see a message board as more of a sharing thing. You clearly don't believe in this ideal.

The fact that you can't comprehend people choosing to thank these people who have done a good job or why people might volunteer at the Olympics is also strange but each to their own.

Again, with the inability to comprehend and just make things up that people haven't said or implied :(

Although, even though I haven't said or implied it anywhere, seeing as we are all homo sapiens, I do agree that we are a global family. Even though there are some that I would prefer not to be related to.

It's debatable. I don't think they were doing jobs that would otherwise have been paid for - well, some may have been, but a lot weren't. On the other hand they were definitely supporting and promoting a profit-making enterprise.

The clue is in the thread being called "discussions" If you want to share shit do it on your facebook, for god's sake.

If I don't buy into the whole Olympic ideology or want the Olympics why would I comprehend it?

You've barely posted on anything else for weeks, and each time, to go on and on about how great it all is. I think we can safely say you've bought all their guff, don't you?

I would hope anyone with an ounce of intelligence should be able to comprehend it whether or not they agree with the Olympics.

And I haven't bought any or "all their guff" either, whatever this so called "guff" is.

They were speaking to a couple of Gamesmakers earlier and asking them what they're going to do now. They suggested they may appply to become volunteers in Rio

I hope you told them to get in touch with one of the very many frontline charities out there who actually need their help, instead.
Twats.

If it helps, one of the volunteers I spoke to who was driving the mobility shuttles is a parent of a disabled child and when they're not a gamesmaker, they work voluntarily for the disabled. How do you know there aren't plenty others like him?

Their guff being more or less what you've spent the last few weeks posting. I honestly cannot comprehend how anyone who understands what The Olympics are, how they're organised, what their effects are, games after games after games, what the people running them are like, and how they were run here, would want anything to do with the whole thing whatsoever.

You've said yourself that you enjoyed (and thereforely presumably watched) some of it. Are you unable to comprehend your own actions?
