TfL Thames Cable Car - Planning Permission Application goes in

tbf, it'll probably be built before they fix that damn lift on the north side of the Greenwich foot tunnel... and then it'll go wrong again...

Looking pretty cool

Took this from The Monument on Monday. Just to the left of the HSBC tower, you can see one of the pylons of the new cable car.

I think it looks fantastic and will make it easier to get to awkward parts of London that have lots to do. Like the cycle hire scheme it should be seen as a complement to the existing public transport infrastructure rather then a replacement.

As for cost, I understand that Emirates are paying £36m for naming rights. Costs to build now estimated at £45m which means about £9m out of the public purse. For the link + jobs it creates that represents fantastic value to the city IMHO.

Don't see way tfl need to pay for a tourist attraction

It's not just a tourist attraction, as I said it's also about civic pride, which granted is a bit of a luxury we can (or can't afford). Architecture, infrastructure and so on makes a populous happier and it has far reaching benefits both sociology and economically. Ralph Erskine recognised the potential of good architecture and infrastructure.

It's for the Olympics and wouldn't have been built if that wasn't happening.

Its just chintz for the O2, a bit of fun for bored excel centre salesman. It looks good but I think its a bit meh for the civic population as a whole.

It's there as an attraction for the Olympics, not because of anything in your post.

I'm not saying what you said isn't true generally, it's just that those things don't apply here and if you try to apply them all you are are doing is justifying this expense.
