Talk to me about pillows, 'cloud pillows' and more.

So I've always had trouble getting a comfy pillow. I just saw this ad for this odd looking thing and while I'm pretty sure it's going to be shit but I thought I'd:

(a) get an opinion and
(b) see what other urbantes use

I'm always more comfy with no pillow.

Does anyone else find a fluffy, comfy, cloudy pillow makes sleep less likely. Or is it just me?

Can't be doing with no pillow, but my current one is old, quite hard and lumpy, certainly not fluffy, and I'm very happy with it.

I always have feather pillows. They start fluffy but I can get them nearly flat in the middle. I like to sleep with almost no pillow and so feathers work best for me.

What is a box sided pillow when it is at home?

I sleep on my side, sometimes my right other times my left, I feel I should try sleeping without a pillow on my back, as at the moment I sleep alone there will be no complaints about my snoring which is worse on my back :) but I feel without a pillow it could retrain me from stooping while I sleep, and any help with that will be most welcome.

Quite happy with my current pillows though, seem to do the trick.

Side sleeper here and after decades of incorrect sleeping, getting a double-sided hi-techy foam pillow from Morleys (one side's even firmer than the other) I'm finally comfy! No brand names here but it's definitely much much better than even a quite firm feather pillow. I just can't see the point of the OP (original pillow) in the thread, wouldn't it leave you feeling a bit choked and with a crick in yer neck?

I love my wedge pillow, apart from the fact that it's supplied with a white, 100% polyester case, which needs washing and I can't get a replacement because JLP doesn't stock them! I would really prefer one that's at least poly-cotton. John Lewis & Partners Specialist Synthetic 4-way Wedge Support Pillow, Medium/Firm at John Lewis & Partners. Not sure I'd spend £85 on a pillow (even if I could afford to), £55 was enough!

I loathe feather pillows. The feathers always poke through (even with a protector underneath the pillowcase). Most of the feather pillows I've ever had have ended up about half an inch thick because I've pulled most of the feathers out!

What is a box sided pillow when it is at home?
A pillow that is basically shaped like a box. Instead of a a single seam running round the edge where the top and bottom sheets meet, it has a side-wall instead so is like a box. They are brilliant if you sleep on your side, and maintain their shape for a surprisingly long time. They're really tall at first, but do flatten down a bit over the years as the feathers compress. I've just chucked mine and need to track down more (got two 'normal' pillows in the meantime).

£25 each from M & S (feather and down - assume you can buy synthetic ones too).

I can never understand how sleeping with no neck support at all is comfortable. I thought the one person I knew who did that was a rarity but clearly there’s a few people for whom pillows are not desirable at all.

Personally I like a nice big soft fluffy pillow. Just the one mind.

Feather all the way here .They mould to your head shape and you can squish them low and flat if you want and they stay soft. The pillows that claim to bounce back etc always seem too high. I don't want my neck at right angles to the rest of me.

I actually "invested" in my first proper pillow this year. It was only a £15 one from Soak and Sleep, but after years of buying the cheap ones from Asda that fall apart within a week it's been a revalation. Those box pillows look good but I'm a back sleeper.

Pillows are all crazy big and uncomfortable. I never questioned them though until going to Japan and seeing their tiny bean bag pillows. Hated the idea at first but quicky got used to it. While I don't have a bean bag pillow back in the UK, I have decided to go for just something small to rest my neck on and not a massive thing that cricks my whole head up.

I spent a fortune on pillows trying to avoid forking out for a tempur one*. Eventually bought one. It was ok but a bit of a disappointment. Then I got this Slumberdown Airstream Support Pillow - Pillows and have been using it longer and happier than anything else, about 1.5 years now.

*I've got their original mattress. and spent a lot on their original weird shaped pillows which did not suit me at all so an expensive waste of money. I figured their new pillow design would suit me but didn't want to spend the money again.

I remember the last time I stayed in a Travelodge there were loads of pillows, just way too many, after I had thrown most of them to the floor I discovered that even just one was too thick for me to relax with - just way too thick no matter how I tried it - I ended up sleeping with none.

I have a veritable pillow mountain - a 'cheese' for support then 1 memory foam job and 2 feather pillows. I like to read until I am oblivious, in a comfy, sitting position. Then, all night long, I wake up many times, to puff my pillow up and turn it over. I would rather sleep in a chair than have no pillow(s).
Most nights I fall asleep with my specs on too.

Got to be honest here Ed. After one night too many waking with a crick in my neck I googled "best pillow" and bought the John Lewis one above.
Ridiculously expensive. My wife hates it. Says its too heavy and throws it out of the bed.
It is the best pillow. I have no regrets

My bed sharee is a side sleeper. It is absolutely extraordinary, like sleeping with an inert log. I swear he doesn't move all night. I sleep on my sides, back, sitting up, occasionally even on my front with my knees tucked up, arms everywhere, covers on, then off, then on again.

I don't often sleep in places other than my beds (I have one in a horsebox too) but have been known to take my pillows with me if I have to.

Same on taking pillows with you.

I go on holiday with my best pillow in the suitcase. I've started packing a dakimakura cover as well so I can stuff it with pillows when I get where I'm going.

I find it difficult to sleep any how and having those two thing really makes a difference.
