Steve Bannon

I don't know the details. I remember the acronym being used in an investment context before so I did some Google-ing.

Seems somewhat analogous but I somehow suspect the American version has far more financial shenanigans built in.

As much as most rich people hate paying taxes Americans seem to turn it into a performance art.

Case in point Trumps largest tax bill being about what I pay per quarter.

in an IRA, you deposit income before it's taxed (so it's not included on your annual 1040) into an interest-bearing account, but it's taxed when you witdraw it, notionally when you reach retirement age and your tax bracket is lower. nothing to do with national liberation armies.

in the states (UK too?) investing in gold is a right-libertarian, anti-government fetish.

Gold is a great store of value. If you're a 17th century pirate, that is. For those of us accustomed to indoor plumbing and that fancy-pants new electrickery, it's just an expensive yellow metal that looks tacky as fuck.

It's also popular among apocalyptic prepper types for reasons that largely elude me. If civilisation collapses, then what the fuck is one going to do with piles of heavy stuff that you can neither eat nor shape into useful tools?

Goldbugs seem to have this idea that their favoured element is somehow inherently valuable, rather than having value because humans decided that it does. The fiat currency they bewail is just a more honest recognition of the value of money as a medium of exchange.

Pardon my ignorance; gold IRA?

"Individual Retirement Account." It's a tax-differed retirement savings vehicle. You pay taxes on the money when its paid out to you. Basically, some of the gold IRA scams issue you a piece of paper with no gold to back it. It sells pretty well with the far-right anti-government types.

There's also a "Roth IRA", where you pay tax on what you put in, but don't pay tax on what you take out.

I don't think skipping showers for four months would seem like a hardship for Bannon - could try to shank him another time but I think his stupid habit of always wearing about five shirts could end up saving his life
I mean he's long displayed the sartorial elegance of someone who routinely gaffa tapes copies of Sports Illustrated around his midriff
