Steampunk fashion. Discussion, praise, sneering etc

Pretty much, yes.

He will argue that it is specifically one from the Highlands because he wants to feel special but I was called a teuchter at school.

That's correct, fogbat. It definitely doesn't. Has he been lying to you?

No, OU, not unless teuchter regularly referring to filthy lowlanders on here counts.

For a long time, I mistakenly thought it was German for Teacher

I ended up checking in the dictionary, after being assured it was not.

It was not :(

Looking at films like City of Lost Children, Delicatessen and Hellboy, I like Steampunk rather a lot :)

movies like Brazil and 12 monkeys come to mind as well as Japanese anime like steamboy, hellboy too yeah. Also Bladerunner. The old HG wells Time machine and War of the Worlds also blended Victoriana with sci fi as well as 20.00 Leagues. Lots of brass and clockwork and glass and tubes

I'm not sure decaying sci fi infrastructure really counts as proper steampunk. That sort of thing is more Gothic sci fi iyswim. See the direction Warhammer 40k took in the ninties.

I guess the appeal of Victoriana is that the workings of the technology are very visible, with cog wheels and chimneys and all that. Good for visual dramatic effect.

As escapist fantasy in movies, comics and games it's an interesting but, IMO, it doesn't realy work in real life as its rootless, just a fashion.

I understand the desire though, I've only recently toned down my celtpunk image. I used to wear my kilts and tartan troos with street clothing. I even have a sporran with cogs and made a cog broach to match it!

I think my OTT celt punk image worked because the two cultures are real and I have a connection to both. The steam/cyber/diesel-punk come out of fantasy so it just looks like someone playing dressing up.
