Sri Lanka erupts

Gearing up for the military and police to kill thousands of people to restore order.

Having a bunch of uniformed thugs go around killing a whole bunch of people doesn't sound like something that would "restore order" by any reasonable meaning of the term. Rather the opposite, in fact. If that's the plan, then whoever's responsible is either a fucking idiot, or isn't actually interested in "restoring order".

you know, this is kind of a mad post actually. why do you think thats whats gonna happen next. Because sri lankans are the kind of people who kill thousands of each other willy nilly or what.

i don't think the police & army are going to kill thousands of people but let's see.
What struck me tbh about all these photos from the past week is how totally chill the protesters were, women and kids in there, taking selfies, playing the piano, its been impossible for a long time there it's not just suddenly last week.
i went there once not long ago, seemed like everyone i spoke to even the most casual chat had lost people in the civil war and then the tsunami, place has been through so much already and that will change how people respond to yet another crisis.

Wouldn't this be a great time for the acting president to settle any auld scores he has

I wasn’t saying they were - I’ve just been filling in the gaps in the conversation. :)

Needless to say, I hope nothing like that happens.

Tax cuts in 2019 emptied the govt coffers.
The organic policy was a result of no cash to buy in fertiliser and dressed up as a green shift.

The folk that are renting the wee shop just up from us are Sri Lankan, and deeply worried about what is happening back home.
Been coming for a while they reckon.

The recent history of the country bimble . The killing by artillery of thousands and thousands of Tamil people. The people who did that are still in charge. They won’t want to let go.

I was there for a month in 2014, just 5 years after the civil war had ended. Sri Lanka was beautiful, I had a great time - but you could still feel the edge. I remember reading an interview there with a famous Sri Lankan cricketer who even described that edge and how the fears had never gone away. On top of that there was a lot of poverty, the prices in the shops (food shops) were ridiculous. It was hard to see how many managed to get by, even back then. While in Colombo there were lovely colonial streets reeking wealth for a few. I wrote back then "if there is to be another civil war it will be between rich and poor, not Sinhalese and Tamil".

I wouldn't write that off yet. This has a long way to run. Setting fire to the residences wasn't a non-violent act.

And hunger makes people angry.

Things are not going so well. Protest leaders are slowly being rounded up and the main protest camp came under assault from the police in a way that has got Human Rights bodies objecting (i.e people had their skulls smashed in in the middle of the night). Rajapaska has nowhere to go (the U.S has refused him) and is thought to be on his way back to Sri Lanka. The state of emergency, which allows the authorities to behave like assholes, has been extended for a month.

Sri Lanka faces looming food crisis with stunted rice crop
August 16, 2022
The rising cost of farm inputs is striking, according to estimates provided by several farmers.

A bag of urea, previously costing 1,500 rupees, is now 40,000 rupees. A litre of Loyant, a popular rice herbicide, goes for more than 10 times its usual price at 100,000 rupees - when available.

The price of an empty sack into which farmers put their harvest has trebled to 160 rupees each, and the thread that they used to tie the sacks is sold for more than five times what it used to be at around 1,200 rupees per kilogram.

The black market rate for diesel is hovering around 1,200 rupees ($3.38) per litre, much higher than the authorised pump price of 430 rupees.

But supplies are scarce, and Lankeshwaran said he has 300 bags of wheat stored at home because traders don't have fuel to pick it up.

"In those days, we feared where the bombs would come from," said the 49-year-old farmer, referring to the civil war that displaced his family of four. "Now, we are dying every day."

I also see shithead definitely wants to come back. Which I can't see being good news for anyone. I'm not sure if he fancies his chances again in a coup, is homesick, or nobody else will have him (highly possible).

I wouldn't give him any security after what has happened, unless he has immunity?

And...he's back. Because nobody else will have him. But SL politicians just might.

Rajapaksa arrived at the main international airport in Colombo and was garlanded with flowers by a welcoming party of ministers and senior politicians as he disembarked.
