Someone with too much time on their hands should do an analysis…
I think we can start to draw some conclusions about forms of transport have their praises sung the most and least - cars are sadly over-romanticised, trains do very well for themselves, buses and coaches have a bit of a hard time of it, and it's almost impossible to think of many tram songs other than this one:
So, initial results are in :
I split Trains 45 and light rail ( eg London Underground and NY subway) 9. So combined permanent way transport was 54 and so the lead category .
Unsurprisingly cars were next with 46.
I spilt aircraft into commercial 10 and general aviation ( fixed wing aeroplanes, rotary and aero static lift ( lighter than air) 12 so a total of 22.
Boats came in at 16 surprisingly beating ships at 12. Submarines 2.
Motorcycles a surprisingly low 12
Buses, pedal cycles and spaceships tied, all on 9
HGV’s and other commercial goods vehicles 8
Equines of all types, both mounted and drawing vehicles 6
Taxis tied with trams on 5
Also on 5, pedestrians
Agricultural machinery ( self propelled) 2
There were 12 cases where I could not identify the mode of transport.
Single songs included, but were not limited to, magic carpets, roller skates, milkfloats and sleighs.
N.b some songs were multi modal.
