Smithfield General Market hall to become the New Museum Of London

The significant failing of the Londonist's coverage is that it's doubtful whether the previous scheme for Smithfield could be called 'regeneration', given that it entailed the demolition of most of the general market. The MoL proposal should be warmly received provided it leaves the bulk of the existing building intact - and the fact that any competing scheme for the market will also have to retain most of its existing structure (after the public enquiry found against the proposed façading, effectively putting a stop to any future such proposals) means there should be less competition from those who would squander its heritage in favour of maxing out on floor space.

he Museum of London is planning to move, and has put up a display of some of the designs being considered for its new home.

The new museum in West Smithfield will be inside the former Victorian meat market buildings which were very nearly demolished for offices, but are currently empty and waiting for a new owner.

The site includes Smithfield General Market, the Fish Market, the Red House and the Engine House, and will see the museum end up about a third larger than it currently is.

The early stage design concepts, which illustrate what the new museum could look
like, embrace a wide range of interpretations.

Not a lot to go on there. Still, I'm very happy to see the old market put to good use, and the museum move out of their horrible building on Aldersgate.

From the link: The Museum of London has officially been renamed London Museum. Oh to be a fly on the wall when they came up with that brilliant idea.

Reminds me of the Private Eye pisstake of Terence Conran in which he rebranded the River Thames as Thames: the river
