Should I buy this guitar?

im looking for a backup guitar in case i break a string at a gig. I play a gibson sg - so need somethign else with the same neck width and fret scale (and double coil pick ups) - otherwise i get thrown cos the guitar feels all wrong.

Seen this epiphone LP on fb market place for £110 - which seems quite cheap - anybody had one? pretty much the cheapest guitar that epiohone do - but is it decent enough as a back up? hmm - eta - it says 3/4 - does it mean the fret scale would be smaller?

I know that Vintage brand SGs are good and cheap, i advised one for nephew 2nd hand and it is great. prob get a better one 2nd hand than an epiphone of the same price

I wouldnt get a 3/4 size.

I’ve not played one. The scale length will probably be shorter, meaning lower tension so you might want thicker gauge strings. But it also usually affects tuning and intonation.

I think they’re called Epiphone Les Paul Express, if you want to look up YouTube reviews.

I had a little Woolies practice amp.

Best guitar I had was a beautiful 1950s Hofner President... till some fuckers attacked my squat in the late 80s and reduced it to Marchwood :( These days I play an Epiphone Joe Pass, which reminds me a lot of the old Hofner.
That’s lovely looking. My main guitar is an Epiphone Sheraton with two Di Marzio humbuckers put in. Just had it refretted following 25 years’ worth of hard gigging put holes in the lowest frets and it’s still sounding good.

Sheraton's are brilliant, I had a go on one of the in-law's.

That reminds me, I also had an old Epiphone Kalamazoo 335 bass that I left with someone in Montpellier in 1982 to look after till I returned. I never returned and lost contact with the lad I left it with :(

That looks horrible. I'm pretty sure it will be junk.
How long does it take you to change a string? If I break one live I just carry on.

I think Harley Benton 'might' be a bit better than Vintage for the same price, but . . . . there is always an epiphone SG going on facebook marketplace or gumtree for around £100 - £150. If it was me I would just wait for one to pop up within walking distance, but that's because I wouldn't want to waste a train ticket (or time) if there was something wrong when I got there.

Equally, if you did want a vintage, facebook market place is also crawling with them for peanuts.

epiphone sgs are now going for about £300 plus (!) . Nah - dont like having to change strings on stage - those 2-3 minutes could mean having to drop a song - and kills any momentum. I have a yamaha pacifica that I am looking to trade/swap.

Nonsense. Have a look on facebook market place. I see one within walking distance of my house (I know that's not your house, it's just an example) for £300.
If I wanted to venture somewhere else I can see loads of epiphone SGs from £100-£200.

They come and go quickly.

When I want something I just type it in every day and wait for it to come up in my area. I never have to wait that longer than a couple of weeks.

Neither do I. I meant I would just carry on with a sting missing. . . . probably different music though.

One on my Gumtree for £175. Looks in good conduction.

edit: it's the VS6 model

yeh that's the thing about the Vintage ones, theres tonnes all over and they're ways cheap.... and I always have a go on my nephews when I visit, they're feel real nice (if you like low action, which I'm not keen on but I know most people are). only thing is I haven't tried it cranked through a loud amp so I dunno if pickups wd need upgrading.... but I researched and most people rate them as virtually same as an epiphone.

edit: it's the vs6 model.... 80 or 90£ on marketplace I think

prefr the SG shape to the Les Paul. I had a Vintage SG copy for a while. Had Wilkinson pickups. Was pretty good but sold it on. Epiphone make nice ones of course.

My first guitar was a strat copy. RockWood by Honer. Just checked they go for about 60 quid. It was kinda awful. Buzzed at the first fret and the electronics just stopped working one day. But you know, I had an electric guitar (and a tiny battery powered amp.) SO fuck yeah. My second was an Ibanez RG something. second hand. Still got it but have blocked the rather crappy TRS floating bridge. IT's great for thrash metal.

Not after a guitar but a new amp. I've been thinking of getting back to live music/gigging. I play mostly blues and some jazz. I offloaded my old gig combo years ago because it became too heavy to lug about, what with bad knees, bad back and with me generally coming apart at the seams... and because I'd stopped gigging. I've been looking at the Fender Mustang LT50.

It's lightweight and seems to suit bluesy jazzy sounds. Anyone got experience of one of these?

Have we got a "what guitar(s) do you have/had?" thread?

I think this is it now. I had a guitar question come up a couple of weeks ago and was looking for a thread but there doesn't seem to be a Guitar Chitter Chatter thread which I was surprised to see.

I have a Squier Strat and just bought a Harley Benton Les Paul copy.

I can't play for shit but it's fun.

Not an answer to your question :D and I may get yelled at by analogue purists, but fwiw Blackstar make really good amps. Amp modelling, clear and deep effects, if anything there's too much flexibility.

Anyway, I've got a 20w one, into which I play an Ibanez Artcore, and it's quite beautiful how old-fashioned this bang-up-to-date, super-modern equipment stuff can sound. And loud.

I've got a diddy little Blackstar. It's great. In fact the sound is beautiful. Dunno how heavy the bigger Blackstars are. Weight is a big issue for me in my current unhealthy state :( Which is why I was looking at the Mustang. It's pretty much light as a feather and weighs in at under 10 lbs.
