Perceived value to club is based in what prizes they win. Their is prize money for winning the League, The FA Cup etc.
Let's take the Champions League.
€90.8 million for the winners. €86.3 million for the runners up.
Now in tennis it's individuals getting direct money. In football it's team and indirect money. The sporting principal still applies though. The more competitions you win the more you earn. Bale earns more as a multiple Champions League winner over someone who hasn't won it. Him and his team will start earning less when they stop winning it.
Admittedly sometimes amounts are paid in advance for results that are never delivered. Pay cuts usually follow such.
