Saddest song ever??

Haven't listened to all of the You Tube links on this thread so apologies if this has already been posted.

Kozmic Blues by Janis Joplin

Its so sad that it almost meets itself coming around the other way and becomes a spirit-raising song.

Time keeps moving on,
Friends they turn away, Lordy Lord.
Well, I keep moving on
But I never found out why
I keep pushing so hard a dream,
I keep trying to make it right
Through another lonely day.

Whoa — don't discover it lasts ...
Honey, time keeps a-moving on, hey yeah, yeah yeah.
Well, I'm twenty-five years older now
So I know it can't be right
And I'm no better baby and I can't help you no more
Than I did when I was just a girl. Yeah!

But it don't make no difference baby, no, no,
'Cause I know that I could always try.
There's a fire inside of everyone of us, huh-uh,
I'm gonna need it now,
I'm gonna hold it yeah,
I'm gonna use it till the day I die.

Don't, honey, don't you expect any answers, dear,
Ah, I know they don't come with age, no, no, no, no.
Hey, I ain't never gonna love you any better baby
'Cause I'm never gonna love you right
So you better take it now, I said right yes now, yeah.

But it don't make no difference baby, no, no,
'Cause I know that I could always try.
There's a fire inside of everyone of us, huh-uh,
I'm gonna need it now,
I'm gonna use it yeah,
I'm gonna hold it till the day I die.

Don't make no difference babe, no, no, no,
Honey, I hate to be the one.
I said you're gonna live your life
And you're gonna love, love, love your life.
I'm gonna need it now,
I'm gonna hold it yeah,
I'm gonna use it, say, whoa ...

Don't make no difference, baby, no, no, no,
Honey, I hate, I hate to be the one.
I said every time you're gonna wanna love somebody,
Every time you're gonna wanna need somebody,
You're gonna wanna turn around, I'm gonna be there.
No no no no no, no no no no no, no no no no.

When you're gonna put out your hand,
All your want is some kind of lovin' man,
He ain't gonna be there, I said, not here.
No no no no, no no no no, no no no no,
No no no, no no no, no no no no,
No no no no, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Whoa, wah wah, whoa,
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Honey when I wanna reach out my hand
I said darling all I ever wanted
Was for you to understand me now — whoa
Ah baby, I wanna sing about me Lord, honey, every day yeah!

This is a song that demands audience participation. All you have to do is clap your hands, man. I know you can cope with it no matter how stoned you are, man. We are all gonna cope with it and we're all pretty stoned, too, man. Like that! I can't hardly hear you, man! — Yeah!

I haven't read the thread and I can't imagine that this has not already been mentioned, but just in case

reduces me to tears just thinking about the lyrics

^^ That's a sad one alright.

Danny Boy gets me welling up every time, and if played by a brass band I'm guaranteed to blub like a child.

the Coventry Carol is another one

I loved it for the melody and the chord changes when I sung it as a kid in school, but had no idea what it was meant to be about.

Even though Herod's infanticidal activities are now considered to be fiction, I think that the song is very real in relation to the horrors of war and political oppression and murder all over the world. By bizarre coincidence I was listening to it one day while reading a news article showing photos of mothers and their babies all murdered by the Khmer Rouge. All the mums and babies in the photos were killed, usually they took the babies outside and smashed them against a tree so as not to waste bullets before killing their mums.

So to me teh Coventry Carol just seems very real, more so than ordinary carols

:(

There are several Jacques Brel songs that one could choose but I'd go for Jaures which is wonderful.

Worth noting, also, that Terry Jack's mawkish Seasons in the Sun was based on a Brel tune.

Turtle Blues

Ah, Im a mean, mean woman,
I dont mean no one man, no good, no.
Im a mean, mean woman,
I dont mean no one man, no good.
I just treats em like I wants to,
I never treats em, honey like I should.

Oh, lord, I once had a daddy,
He said hed give me everything in sight.
Once had a daddy,
Said hed give me everything in sight.
Yes, he did.
So I said, honey, I want the sunshine,
You take the stars out of the night.
Come on and give em to me, babe, cause I want em right now.

I aint the kind of woman
Whod make your life a bed of ease, ha ha ha ha!
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Im not the kind of woman, no,
To make your life a bed of ease.
Yeah, but if you, if you just wanna go out drinkin, honey,
Wont you invite me along, please.
Oh, Ill be so good to ya babe, yeah!
Whoa, go on!

I guess Im just like a turtle
Thats hidin underneath its horny shell.
Whoa, whoa, oh yeah, like a turtle
Hidin underneath its hard-ass shell.
But you know Im very well protected
I know this goddamn life too well.

Oh! now call me mean, you can call me evil, yeah, yeah,
Ive been called much worser things around,
Honey, dont ya know I have!
Whoa, call me mean or call me evil
Ive been called much worser things, all things around,
Yeah, but Im gonna take good care of janis, yeah,
Honey, aint no one gonna dog me down.
Alright, yeah.

Alas, poor Janis wasn't well protected; didn't know this goddamn life to well; and, she failed to take good care of herself.

What a shame; what a voice.:(

The only songs that make me cry aren't necessarily sad but I associate them with sad things - such as funerals.

I haven't read the thread and someone else may have already mentioned it but fields of gold sometimes chokes me up.

This epic should deprive listeners of their will to live:

Optimistic, cheerful and uplifting listening it isn't.

Without trawling all the links (cos I can't get YouTube) and therefore not knowing whether it has been mentioned, but for me Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain -Willie Nelson tops the list.

Any votes for doom metal? St Vitus's "I Bleed Black", or Cathedral's "Ebony Tears?"

Otherwise, a mention for Twinkle's "Terry". Came out at about the same time as the Shangri-La's "Leader of the Pack" and has a similar theme (a fatal motorbike crash) but is IMO more affecting;
