Saddest song ever??

The Billy Holiday song is moody but at the end it is not sad where she wakes up. It is just a beautiful song beautifully executed. I don't understand the Hungarian Suicide connection.

The Mortal Coil song is new to me and just seems very slow. I dragged the pointer along the bottom of the picture to try to get to the point of the song but could get no satisfaction.

The most powerful and sad song I have ever heard is by Billy Holiday. It is Strange Fruit. I have a CD with this song on. I usually skip that track because it is just too much to take.

Edited to add: Yes Dorothy Moore Misty Blue is a goodun. I had forgotten that. I really love the version by Monica and Mary J Blige:

I'm loving all these, I'm in such a good mood that these are only making me happier, in fact I'd like to do a 'Sad Song Mix Tape'.

Here's my choice, a bit of a dark horse....it's the theme to that great tv show...The Littlest Hobo

Sob.

Oh yes I love that Peggy Lee Song. It has hints of German Cabaret from the thirties in the tonality of the tune. It is not wholly sad though, but very emotional. It is more about acceptance.

I come back with another Mary J Blige song;

For everyone who has clung onto someone's ankles as they got on the train at liverpool street station on a drunken friday slurring ''but I loooooooove yoooooooooo''

If you're feeling happy, nobody beats Maz for euphoric misery

We Belong Together

I Wish You Knew

Without You

Sticking to the good ballads to shout when you're pissed theme, how about

Tread carefully, for you tread on some really funny memories :hmm:

It's not often I prefer covers, but PJ Harvey's is much better IMO

Sorry to get all French on you, but I find "Les Vieux" (The Old) by Jacques Brel utterly heartbreaking. Hard to pick out his saddest one, but this does it for me.

Subtitled version:

I burst into tears in Hackney Tesco listening to this on my sony ericsson last year

Headed straight for the feminine hygiene products aisle. I know how to read the signs.

I have to say I find "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division pretty much impossible to listen to simply because of the emotions it generates, though not all of that is the song itself. It's one of the few songs I will leave a room to avoid hearing, other than songs that are complete kack.
