RIP Wilko Johnson

LEGENDARY Canvey musician Wilko Johnson, who has terminal cancer, has revealed he won’t play again.

The musician was due to play two final gigs in Canvey - one of them with 80s singer Alison Moyet - but the 65-year-old had to cancel when he was feeling unwell.

He has been performing for more than 40 years with rhythm and blues band Dr Feelgood but after cancelling the final two gigs of his farewell tour due to illness he has decided enough is enough.

Shame they cant get his musical history right - but lets not nit pick. Sad times and that light is flickering ever dimmer.

Shit. :( There was a good interview with him on Front Row few weeks back. I had Radio 4 on in the background, as usual but stopped what i was doing to properly listen. Picked up the guitar to have a go at one of his riffs he talked through.

Very sad - was at the Lee Brilleaux gig at the Oysterfleet on Friday night - he was sorely missed. Whole Julien Temple Oil City Confidential is on You Tube at the moment - brilliant movie even if you don't like Dr Feelgood and Wilko is the chief commentator in it.

Some highlights from the 20th Memorial Lee Brilleaux gig at the Oysterfleet Pub Canvey Island - includes the local vicar name checking Wilko as did every band.

Well that was fucking ace:)
Still got it and still giving it out, what a genuine star. Funny as fuck :D

*Sticks Roxette on*

Second part Q&A tomorrow afternoon at 3.30 and available as a download.

Wilko Johnson
Series 5
Duration: 1 hour
First broadcast: Sunday 09 June 2013

Earlier this year Dr Feelgood guitarist Wilko Johnson was diagnosed with terminal cancer of the pancreas.

In this emotional First Time with... Matt Everitt chats to the influential musician, reflecting on his death and why he has chosen not to receive any chemotherapy.

He looks back fondly at a life in music - growing up in Canvey Island, his band's influence on the roots of the British punk scene, and playing with Ian Dury and the Blockheads.

In this the fifth show in the current series of The First Time with... Wilko discusses the pivotal moments and songs that have shaped his life and career.

Had the pleasure of doing monitors for Wilko a couple of weeks ago at Cornbury Fest.

A lovely bloke, a great set of songs and a fantastic performer ( as well as bassist Norman !)

The crowd egged him on for an extra two encores... he was pretty choked up by the response. Later he was sitting watching Van Morrison at the foot of the stage ...nodding along looking totally chuffed at it all....

Will be sorely missed... a true gent

I always pause before I check any Wilko threads.
Any guy who can make one guitar sound like three is a bit special.
Have seen him loads of times and if I am out of hospital and capable I will go to see him once more at Cusworth,it's only round the corner.
Two heroes Wilko and Norman, what better way to spend a summer evening.:)
Thanks Wilko with putting an end to all those god awful 40 minute solos we had to endure till you and the Feelgoods turned up.
My claim to fame is being in the audience at Sheffield on the Stupidity album.
My mate Glenn scored a couple of tickets and we went along expecting something good, what we saw changed our musical taste direction forever.
Thanks Wilko, Fuckin A.:)
