RIP Shane MacGowan

From the Bowman show - "these songs sounded like standards, like they were seventy-five years old. . ."
Particularly love the sound and production on Rum, Sodomy and the Lash. The next album is acclaimed to be the best, but there's a little bit too much polish on it for me. Still adore it but there's something extra special about the second release.

Had an all staff work catch-up meeting today. Notice on the door of the meeting room: contents may trigger..etc..
First Post on the screen was an 'ice-breaker' about Christmas songs, and a single photo of Shane in front of a rainy window.
Impossible to validate but, as second generation Irish, Shane gave a lot of people (a lot of..) reasons to celebrate.
Triggered.

Went to an event last night where they played Fairytale of New York as the night was closing, then after it finished a handful of people burst into a rendition of Dirty Old Town on their own. Obv the latter isn't actually Shane's song, but a lot of people, me included, were introduced through his version and almost certainly wouldn't know it otherwise.

Oh, and someone read a poem by Benjamin Zephaniah, but that's a different person for a different thread really.

It’s likely to be one of the few they know the words to too.
It doesn’t matter, it’s anyway a way to honour remember and lament the man.

And tbf, this was in... not actual Salford, but in Greater Manchester, so a lot more geographically appropriate than most Pogues songs.

Just wanted to post this clip from Shane's funeral mass.
Lisa O Neill and Glan Hamsard singing "Fairytale of New York" and Viktoria and others dancing around Shane's coffin.

He got an amazing send off. His sister had everyone in tears..clearly has the same gift of writing that Shane had...telling of their childhood in Ireland and then the UK and holidays back in Irrland.

God can’t you just imagine Shane laughing his guttering laugh and showing his disaster teeth all the way up to the ears when this was going on. And crying too. Not afraid of his own sentimental side was he.

This is lovely, I think,
A potted history of his life, in (an edited version of) his own words

Some photos here, taken at the opening of his art show last year.

The rip in his left earlobe is a relic of this incident :

In the photos of the opening, he’s wearing wraparound shades, holding a glass of champagne, wearing a large cross and beautiful electric blue suit. He looks calm and happy.

But you can see that slit in his earlobe, his hands look like he’s got Dupyutren’s contracture, his ankles are strapped together so his feet don’t fall off the footplate. He was never afraid of carrying his story openly. In his words, his deeds, his behaviour, all honest and all open. His body also tells the honest story.

Can't work that out, is it an attempt at humour by the twat, or the twat being astonishingly stupid (and a twat)?

Either way, also trying to garner support from someone or anyone by calling someone out for being dreadful and disrespectful.

ie using Shane’s funeral and the widespread feelings of loss and celebration of the man as currency for his own venal means.

Hadn't heard Lisa O'Neil before this week. She's got a fantastic voice.

he's got a total track record of being astonishingly stupid and a twat.

See also the Lozza Fox attempt to use the Pogues in his pathetic culture wars earlier in this thread.

tl;dr: fash are venal shites as usual.

She's amazing. One of my favourite things about this year. Still not managed to catch her live but hopefully the stars will align next year.

I looked her up on the back of hearing her belting out Fairy Tale of NY. From what I aaw, she's nothing like that normally, though really distinctive.
