RIP David Bowie

Was listening to Heroes, and the bit where he sings louder "I, I will be king" got me for some reason

Maybe because his voice sobs in such a heartbreaking way on that line?

I know what you mean though. I've tried to listen to that LP and can't yet. Just the sound of it in my head sets me off. And that extraordinarily beautiful video of him singing Heroes alone in the light.

(uh-oh, I'm off again....)

Heroes, done by Six by Seven, in German (because the singer of Six by Seven was brought up on a German RAF or possibly Army base) ...seriously, check it out. It's a decent version. Six by Seven are/were cool.

I'll tell you what though: plenty of folk have said that they had no idea who Bowie was but now realise they know and love loads of his songs, just never knew it was him.

And I'm loving that lots of people (hello Orang Utan ) are taking time to delve into his work.

For years, especially when im at a bus stop and tryin to get my mojo going, the riffs from 'Lets Dance' and 'Fashion' just spring into my head. I prefer some artists to David Bowie, but he is the only one whose melodies simmer in my head, 24/7, like old friends.....in 'Fashion,' for example, you are SUMMONED to get your f*ckin shit together! the mood changes cut like a knife, and i love that. Yet there's a discoey upbeat feel, that i always search for in music.

Fashion might be my favourite, but then maybe it's Fame.
Then it could be Modern Love cos that's the first one I heard (it's on Now That's What I Call Music 1 IIRC) - I used to do the whole singing in front of the mirror thing in my bedroom.
Let's Dance too. I dunno!
Can't get Space Oddity of my head this week too!

I get this too, I really do. Fashion marches through me and slaps me into shape.

Fashion is just....wow. I dont know how it rates among Bowie fans but its....dont know if you call them 'riffs' but it's melody is so profound. Bowie was a HUGE Syd Barrett fan, and i am too. i could easily have imagined Bowie writing songs like 'See Emily Play' (his favourite) and 'Matilda Mother' but for me, its almost like David Bowie took up the baton Syd left, and thank GOD for him, cos he was every bit as good.

It's not a league table though, Cheesypoof ! :D

Mostly I think it's about what age you are, what decade you were growing up in, or whether or not it's the electric guitar or electronic music or a ripping rhythm section that lights you up.

i wouldnt measure it that way - there is no rhyme or reason with some music - its SO DAMN GOOD it just (i sound like a hippy here) transcends!

nothing about what i like has any bearing of what era i grew up in (thats just my personal experience) with all due respect.

There is a wonderful description of Bowie's influence on popular culture by John Lydon in his biography released in 2013. Its upstairs, i remember reading it and going 'wow.' i'll copy and post it up later x

3 great docs on iplayer I am currently watching. The great thing about the man is he's still so current. 4th track on blackstar is a great example. The drums...the bass! Wow.

Howard Donald (of Take That) has named his son, born on Tuesday, after David Bowie.

Inexplicably, this means the kid's name is Bowie Donald.

I suppose David Donald sounded too much like a comic book character?

We have to realise that, regardless of upbringing, background, status or privilege, people of a certain age will have listened to, bought, loved his music. You cant blame them for that. He did some top class shit.

Amazing David Bowie documentary on RTE (Irish TV) at the moment - all about his musical composition and interviews with his musicians

Just so many vivid memories associated with Bowie's music, that can take me back in time.

Golden Years - watching him on Soul Train via TOTP

Five Years - coming home from school and putting Ziggy Stardust on in my parents' living room - a bit of space on my own to relax and discover my teenage self

Fashion - living as a student above a nightclub and going to sleep to the thudding beat of this song

Wild Is The Wind - sitting in a pub in Leicester with my then-boyfriend, knowing it wouldn't last, finding this song very hard to listen to, then rediscovering this song with my life partner.

There are tons of others - he's been an ever-present as long as I've known music. I would say he was the greatest genius of the pop/rock era. Here are a couple of my favourites as well as those mentioned above.

discussing this tonight- ainteresting point from mrs NBE - asked if In had ever met anyone who disliked Bowie music?

I couldnt confirm it. I hate U2 and know others who do, Crowded house, blah. But never met anyone who said they didnt like his stuff- maybe some not to their liking but there always seemed to be something in his catalogue they liked.

very odd when you think about it, has anyone else garnered such a response?
