RIP Anthony Bourdain

I'm not sure how different that makes him from others who eat meat. He enjoys the killing process, but he is at least honest in doing it himself, no?

Even by conventional standards the way in which he killed animals and the types of abuses he turned in to t.v. entertainment were gruesome (like eating the brains of live animals, ripping out their hearts and other organs whilst they were still alive etc.) See also his callousness about animal suffering in the previous video.

Sad news, never saw much of his TV show but definitely enjoyed Kitchen Confidential and his other books. HIs suicide is a surprise - serves as a reminder that there can sometimes be an enormous gulf between the persona people present to the world and what is really going on.

I'm happy to respect your point of view, but this is an RIP thread about someone who appeared to matter to quite a few people. Perhaps you could keep the animal rights polemicism to one of the many and various threads which seem to abound on the topic, and let those of us who want to do a little remembrance do so in comparative peace?

Okay, I'll leave the thread. Wouldn't want to disturb the hagiography any longer.

He was an asshole, but he made me laugh. Hated vegetarians with a passion. RIP.

BTW, what is it with wealthy people offing themselves lately? Sometimes I think its better to be dumb and poor like me than smart and wealthy.
Got a feeling the number of wealthy people committing suicide is merely reflecting a general trend. It's just that dumb and poor people doing it (individually) doesn't make the news.

Sadly, you're probably right. However, I do notice that some of the "dumber" people I know tend to be happier than the smarter ones. I don't think being wealthy makes you any happier, although it will give you a longer life and it can be helpful to have enough money to throw minor problems.

I think it's just a random cluster, the general trend is too gentle a slope to be responsible.

Zip code matters:

From 1999 to 2016, rates increased in nearly all states, ranging from a 6 percent increase in Delaware to a 57 percent increase in North Dakota.

Twenty-five states had increases of more than 30 percent.

“Suicide is a leading cause of death for Americans — and it’s a tragedy for families and communities across the country,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, principal deputy director of the CDC.

“From individuals and communities to employers and healthcare professionals, everyone can play a role in efforts to help save lives and reverse this troubling rise in suicide.”

Nearly 45,000 Americans age 10 or older died by suicide in 2016, according to the CDC.

Researchers also found that more than half of people who died by suicide did not have a known diagnosed mental health condition at the time of death.

"Relationship problems or loss, substance misuse; physical health problems; and job, money, legal or housing stress often contributed to risk for suicide," the report reads.

CDC: Suicide rates on the rise in almost every state

Yeah, I'd been reading the CDC stats too.
To be fair, having been to Delaware, I expect their modest increase in suicide rate was mostly down to it being pretty damn high to start with.

There's some economic factors going on here too. In North Dakota there's been a lot of job loss as the price of oil went down. It went from boom to bust pretty quickly.

Yeah, I was being flippant. Things like this can have huge effects.

Today I lost one of my heroes. I had dreams in the future of us meeting and chatting about food and life and how he came to this journalistic career so late in life. He was my very favourite chef and then foodie as he withdrew from the industrial kitchens and took me on a tour of the world and making me curious about all manner of cuisines. And the writing!! Oh the writing. He's influenced my hand in so many ways. And I've had a couple of fan type interactions with him which I shall always treasure.

Me: "Do you get the fear sometimes about your career, that you're gonna wake up and it was all a dream? A f'cking kick ass dream though."

To which he replied:

Tony: "I DO feel pretty lucky. I DO still pinch myself. I never expected anything like this to happen - for sure."

And I never expected this to happen. First time, even after Kurt and Layne and Chris that I've called someone a selfish cunt for leaving :( He's my laptop wallpaper, him and Iggy and I've been shouting at it.

Tony I never got the chance to say thank you. Right where my life is headed now is thanks to you cos you taught me the only person who can be responsible for it is me. So I'm breaking out the smokes and Fun House by The Stooges cos I know it was your favourite, and continue to call you some names for a while cos fuck man, your daughter :( , but fuck me I'll miss you.

Looking around I noticed that the was a Parts Unknown where he'd visited Scotland.

It's here, and an interesting watch

Atypically for a food/travel show, there's a long segment on the work of the Violence Reduction Unit (who I work with on occasion)

Edit: This is the one with AA Gill, and so adjust your expectations accordingly

This is such a shame, he was an absolute genius. I've just finished watching The Layover on Netflix and he's great in that as ever. I honestly don't think the whole "dirty food" thing would have happened without him, maybe not even the street food scene as we see it today, Kitchen Confidential put a massive rocket up the arse of the dining industry. What a fucking shame.
