Review: Secret Garden Party 2011

Not massively impressed by the stance of the people who made this video tbh.
Can't say that I'm massively impressed to see a load of jumped-up goons assaulting and intimidating members of the public quite frankly.

"if you put that camera in my face, I'll stick it up your arse", I think one security guard put's it.

I'm just judging by the video. We never really hear the background to or see the cause of the core incident in which an old man is wrestled to the ground.

There were lots of second hand reports going round of over the top security but I have to say my only negative experience was heading out of the site on the Saturday night when one of the goons called me over to give me a ticking off about carrying a bottle. When I pointed out it was plastic and bought at one of the bars and added a "so why don't you just fuck off and leave me alone" he soon got back in his shell :hmm:

Not overly impressed by the vid - the guy involved does kick off and grab the female security guard to try and get her to answer him. But they do seem a bunch of complete idiots (security) and a lot of them were complete 'meat-heads'.

Security were removing folks from site, i know of a few who had got in without wrist bands got caught and were locked into a van, kept in there until more had been rounded up and then dumped in the middle of nowhere about a good 5 miles plus from site - I am still not sure of the legality of that - yes ensure they leave the site which is private property - but taking them miles away - that could be construed as 'kidnap' as in the film.

I have to say there was an exceptionally funny security guy on duty by the van field - think he was off it the whole weekend, dancing, singing and generally stumbling about!

some fo the things I'm reading in various places make the security sound pretty bad, but then they wouldn't all have been dicks/cunts, still, it seem the organisers are not really engaging with anyone contacting them about it on their site. Not exactly a good sign imho.

As with all events of this type, expansion and popularity brings headaches that often they don't want to deal with.

SGP are notorious for being as tight arses as humanly possible, so they will have got the cheapest security on the block. Seemed OK to me, but I was working with them and that is how it goes down generally.

Lot and lots of fence jumpers this year. Actually starting to be a really big issue for SGP, though I'm unsure if they see it that way.

I saw security giving off duty security a hard time checking wrist bands in the arena which is the 1st time I'd ever seen inner festival wristband checks.

They were doing a lot of inner festival wristband checks - all round - camping particularly - to the point of turfing folks out of their tents! Searching their belongings.

What was funny though was someone I know got all her canisters taken(by security) along with various substances - only to be give all the substances back (by security) together with a bag of coke that wasn't hers:D but they kept the canisters....

I got the feeling there was a fence jump / people smuggling problem. From what I've read the old fence was *very* leaky, but the new one apparently had it's breach points.

I'm a bit mixed on this. Some jumpers are simply genuinely broke and aren't trouble. Others - historically at least - aren't good news. Then again, the pro theives buy tickets these days. *shrug*

I never had a problem with security. Then again I never do. Never been searched, anywhere, any festival. One small consolation of being an old bugger. ;)

The ones I saw doing searches on the gate by the van field certainly seemed 'robust' in their approach though. Not so much it would have pissed me off personally, but I can understand some people not being happy about it.

Did u watch that vid? the whole thing kicked off because a bunch of roided up security guards beat the fuck of a 60+ year old man.

They're proper cunts, but u get what u pay for.

some of the festival goers had a bad time at the hand of security and have posted a vid entitled Secret Garden Party Criminals

It's a Charlie Veitch production.

Do a bit of research about him here on urban. Not a random festival goer by any stretch. One post here on urban suggests he sold video footage of the 'Fire Extinguisher' protestor to The Sun. His previous activist partner split from him and didn't have many good words to say about the guy.

Be aware of all the facts around Veitch before you take this video at face value.

Plenty of chat here: http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/threads/348566-Charlie-Veitch

As I think I said earlier, one of my mates got mugged by five lads. Not normal festival-goer behaviour. All those expensive cameras laying just behind flimsy canvas must be very tempting.

There was a rumour that a crew member in hi viz got jumped and mugged too, not heard anything about it after the fest tho.....

The only thing I saw was the police taking three chaps' details. It looked drug related but it didn't look like they were arresting them. Probably just a caution or something. I didn't get the impression that there was any aggro anywhere though.

The mental security guy I was talking to told us that too. Pretty ballsy to rob one of the crew members, knowing that there's a decent crowd of meaty nutters in high vis willing to extract retribution.

I don't understand why so many security firms employ aggressive arseholes, or why festie organisers keep employing them.

I mean, its a sad fact that you do *need* to have some blokes on hand at festivals who can stand up to gangs of thieves and robbers, or drunken yobs, and if necessary fight them. But you shouldn't let those people loose on the paying punters in general.

And why do the organisers allow their "security" to start pulling people out of their tents and shit like that?

I mean, fair enough, they've got to jump on overt drug-dealing or obvious drug use, to protect the event's future licence from the police saying "you allowed such-and-such to go on and did nothing to stop it".

But someone must tell the goons its OK to start aggressively searching people's tents, just as at other events, someone has clearly told them NOT to behave like this to the paying customers.

How does Glastonbury manage? They *do* employ some hard-looking security dudes to patrol the perimeter and stop people jumping in, but the security people you see inside seem pretty chilled out.

Giles..

I dont think it was a security guard it happened too..... Dont really wanna say what I heard about it on a public forum as I dont know the facts, what i've heard is rumour mill stuff as its what somebody I was working in the same organisation as overheard on the radio.

Giles - I imagine it's because the security has to be SIA registered, and in the countryside, that means the local bouncers. Glastonbury has such a large prescence, I imagine they can get the pick of them, whereas the smaller operations just get stuck with the locals.

Just guesswork, mind.

At anything other than a backyard festival, security is contracted to a company. No 'locals' thing going on.

clearly.

i can't work out whether i'm more puzzled by your comparison of "licensed" and "local", or the idea that somehow, glastonbury gets the creme de la creme of the security world.

the security blokes (and woman) in that vid are acting like wankers, imo, as professional doorstaff, i think they should be able to control a situation better. whether the fuckwit with the camera is a fuckwit is another question, there are ways of calming something down or stoking something up.

The loud hailer thing is a neat device.

You can appear to say reasonable things, not sounding out of control
(shouting). Your oppos are now stumped. To bystanders, you either shout (sounds aggressive), or don't.

Loud hailers are an awesome protest tactic.

Does Charlie Veitch, hailer blazing, acquit himself with this set up? He's good at set-ups, sure. Pied-piper of activism.

He didn't say it was a security guy who was robbed, just "crew", so coulda been anyone really. But I bet the security guys would happily wade up to back another employee up given half a chance.
