Review: Secret Garden Party 2011

Still in need of some tinkering, captions, a proppa ending and end credits but wanted to get *something* out there as finished it before this year's SGP last week but didn't have the time to upload it.

I am seriously considering SGP for next year but the no spirits thing is actually far more annoying than the limited amount of beer. I buy plenty of lager/cider at festivals because I prefer it cold. I'm buggered if I'm paying 3 or 4 quid for a shot, especially as they probably won't even sell what I want to drink.

How strict is the no spirits thing, how full on are searches at the gates?

No spirits and a limit on cans! Security carrying out spot searches on tents.

Sounds more like a detention centre than a festival.

There are ways... I'll PM you. ;)

It's massively draconian in that sense, but if you can mentally/physically get past that... it's a bloody amazing festival. The detail, the beauty, the randomness. Well worth it.

Still missing SGP. Want to be back. Haven't felt like this about a festival since my first Glasto.

Someone at work said they do 'events' ? A night out with SGP'ers would be fab. Clinging on to festy memories and all that, but would be a good tonic. :)

The no spirits thing is easy to get around. Like most things really, where there's a will, there's a way. Would deffo be on a gardeners' night out too.

A friend who went to SGP this year just bought a ticket to Wilderness, which she said is the 'sister festival' of SGP or something?

Have to say, have heard generally good reports all round about SGP, both here and IRL. After getting into the idea of non-Glasto festivals, it's definitely gone to the top of my lists check out next year.

Looks like SGP have some involvement in Wilderness.

It's new I think? Seems like they have some interesting ideas, more towards a Latitude type mix of entertainment.

Security at the entrance gate was very heavy, 2 sniffer dogs and lots of police presence. On site coppers too. No spirits allowed, even when in plastic bottles.

Found the majority of the crowd not interested in interacting or having a crack at all, which really grates on me 'cos it's soo missing the point. Is this the 'mainstreaming ' of festival culture ? Discuss ...

I do agree it's staggering beautiful , sweet lord my eyes! Disneytastic

- Onsite police: I saw two (uniforms) all weekend. Given it's 17k punters, I'd assume some police presence to be the norm. Main criticism would be that the ones I saw were all togged up macho. Arguably just dressed for a possibly muddy weekend with whatever they have to hand (e.g. boiler suits), but Avon and Somerset at Glasto manage to be festy-like (or at least, neutral) in their togs and generally carry big smiles. All other forces policing festivals should send field trips to see how A&S do it at the big one.

- People interacting: Might be subjective. I had no end of people to talk to, and see doing daft things. I was all excited beforehand, so maybe I was predisposed? Dunno. I'm still convinced it ranks fairly highly on that front, away from main stage stuff (which, rather nicely imho, is stuck in a corner, rather than the centrepiece - as someone else here observed IIRC)

heh, I didn't even notice it was missing :D and yeah, I thought it'd be expensive but £12k?? still, gives you an idea of the silly amount of money they put into the arty stuff at the festival and the difference/uniqueness that generates for the festival's look & feel.

That's what the artist said it cost to make. Easily possible if she had to use commercial specialists to fabricate or construct.

As to SGP *paying* that - no reason for them to. There's no need for a festival to own decor, stages, PAs etc.

I'm sure she will have had to use commercial specialists, it's a complicated bit of kit, and I'm not saying it is an outrageous price..
I was told the island was the same as the image on their website, hence my thought that it was bought/paid for by SGP, but I've just had a look at their flash site and it's not so yeah, they probably hired for a few hundred pounds (maybe a thousand, shouldn't be more than that - I don't know about decor stuff though and how many gigs they want to use something for before it starts paying back); I do know that they pay their artists costs though so they might well have paid for more than a straight hire cost, even if not for the total...
my shock at the £12k is because that's around about the total cost for the LED screen on the main stage and whenever I think of costs for events, I'm always considering whether that money is best spent there, and I'm pretty certain that 12k could be spent better on other things.. but as you say, SGP won't have spent anything like that.

No, my understanding is they are purely refering to the value of the "Is Land" balloon type structure. I agree it's a serious amount of money to apply to something which is to all intents & purposes nothing more than a piece of background artwork but if the artist created it with a view to hiring it out at £1,000 a pop (which isn't an unreasonable assumption if they were looking to shipping it out to Burning Man) then it's a senseless and unecessary piece of vandalism which has left her seriously out of pocket.

obviously senseless and unneccessary.. my confusion here comes from my belief that it was made specially for the festival (they also do stuff at Burning Man, so it didn't surprise me it was going out there) and that the festival would have paid for it entirely, which as has been pointed out probably isn't true

12K hire, for the screens, presumably?

:D yes hire.. iirc each panel is about £1k to buy and there were around 130 panels used (plus a dozen or so spares on site), plus the controllers, probably around 150k to buy the screen.. some of that 12k hire is to pay for the LED & AV techs and camera ops + their equipment as well. That's what I meant by total cost (no point in hiring a screen if you've got no-one to put some video on it!)

some of the festival goers had a bad time at the hand of security and have posted a vid entitled Secret Garden Party Criminals

Not massively impressed by the stance of the people who made this video tbh.
