Rest is Noise bar/pub, Brixton

Ivan Retreat was alright, the did nice burgers and played fairly decent music. I didn't like it on a friday or saturday night because it was TOO packed and the music was so loud that you had to shout to have a chat... not my idea of fun!

I think Amersham Arms works because of the Goldsmiths ArtFag Contingent...

As others have said, it does seem abit out of place in Brixton... might have worked in Clapham tho...

Not my choice of venue at all, I prefer a pub. But I'm not going to stubbornly say it's always empty just cos I don't like it.

I don't think anyone is doing that - they're just passing on their personal experiences of the place.

I rather liked it when I went there, but I'd never seen it busy.

It looked a bit wanky when I walked past a couple of nights back. Music wafting out onto the street was pretty dreadful. Wasn't tempted.

The name's taken from the title of a book about avant-garde 20th century music too.

Which is itself an inversion of Hamlet's last words "The rest is silence".

[/wanky]

i hope the place is a success...
and i hope you who have been slagging it off dont go in there...
whats wrong with popping in there before your gig at the academy ?
why dont you just stand outside wiv a placard saying "wee dont like anyone who is not from brixton how dare you drink here " f$! k off outsiders

I won't be going in there as I don't drink, neither do I go to gigs at the academy.

Maybe we don't like anyone from outside Brixton. Or some of those inside, for that matter.

I agree that it looks promising, and I hope to see some cool stuff there. But we poked our head in today after the Pixies and it looked pretty grim. I think the problem is that the venue - try as they have - isn't intimate, and it just feels like a meat market.

I didn't see you.;)

overpriced, but it was good to see a packed venue watching the mighty Honkeyfinger. Any new dimension to Brixton music is good IMO

what time did Honkeyfinger play in the end? I turned up around 10 after having watched Will Kaufman at the Dogstar. I watched JD Smith, but it was too far passed my midweek bedtime to hang around much later. Bit annoyed about that cos I'm not really fussed about Smith - he's a good performer and all but he's only got one song and it ain't that marvellous. He could really do with a band I reckon. Plus I was on my own so had already had far too much to drink.

probably about 11.30 I guess - pretty quick after Smith finished.. We didn't stay for much of Honkeyfinger because we had the leaving do to go to, but he was great as ever

Haven't been in to it since it has changed. I liked the decor, beers and food but could not believe how awful the service was. The staff seemed really friendly but utterly incompetent. I've seen groups of people leave on a Sunday as they could not get served. The 2 roasts for £12 was great but I always had to spend so long just waiting for a drink!

My friend says he got charged £3.90 for a pint there last night. That can't be right, can it?

I know, I was gonna say something at the time, but I didn't wanna look like a cheapskate in front of the girl I was trying to impress.  :D

as a counterpoint they were doin £10 for 4 cans of redstripe and London Pride was £2.90 a pint, not bad. There's some weird decore in there that's for sure. Just felt a bit boring though down there, it's a bit of a cack layout I agree, maybe it was all the Pixies fans , dunno.

I popped in there tonight. It wasn't even as busy as the Albert, but they've done a pretty good job in doing the place up and making it feel cosy.

Pubs that sells cans are a fucking disgrace. £10 for 4 cans is not a good deal. Ever.

Ended up in here for a late drink after our Jamm night last night. I actually quite liked it, but there was hardly anyone there (to be fair, it was 12.30am), which is probably why I liked it. I can imagine when packed to the gills with twats, it's unbearable. Some decent music played last night too, and there'd been a gig of some sort, but we missed that.

i went in yesterday afternoon with a couple of mates. it was empty apart from us but the staff were nice and the place was quite funky/interesting, with lots of old battered sofas and funky furniture, interesting art and free magazines. cant remember if they had any real ales on, but there was a few decent ciders on tap. the menu looked like decent pub food (burgers, vegi burgers etc) and reasonably priced at £5 or £6.

i reckon this place will do well actually. i think it's gonna take a while to find its crowd, but i can imagine lots of people being attracted here.

I live here, and it isn't all bad. Yes, there are a lot of things I'd like to change if I had my way, but that's not for this discussion.

Personally I'm not a drinker so visiting any of the pubs or bars round Brixton is not something I'd be doing in a hurry. Having said that, out of not going to any pubs or bars, this place looks like somewhere I'd particularly make a point of not going to.

Just trying to make the point that this place looks quite unsuitable for the area, that's all.

Out of interest, what would be right for this area, in your opinion?

Ended up here for another post-Jamm pint on Thursday. It's starting to grow on me. It's a bit like the Dogstar but with better music.

I must have just missed you :)

Totally agree. Ended up in there on Friday for a couple of drinks and it was a great atmosphere.

Perhaps they ought to move to Shoreditch instead then, if that's what they're looking for. This is Brixton.

:D

This does make me giggle. The number of media types I know who live in Brixton to keep it real, man, is amazing. The advancement of gentrification my not be at the same stage, but don't kid yourself it's not the same thing.
