There goes the Iraq-Syria (Sykes-Picot) border:

What constitutes Iraq as a state at the moment? It's surely I'm danger of not so much failing, but disappearing?

If one good thing were to come out of this, it would be the creation of Kurdistan. Not sure if the Turks, Syrians or Iranians would be too happy though. Not to mention the rest of the Iraqis.

All 16 U.S. Intelligence agencies, told George W. Bush in January 2003 that:'the invasion of Iraq . . . would be likely to spark violent sectarian divides and provide al-Qaeda with new opportunities in Iraq and Afghanistan . . . Analysts warned that war in Iraq also could provoke Iran to assert its regional influence and "probably would result in a surge of political Islam and increased funding for terrorist groups" in the Muslim world'.

edit: the question is whether the analysis wasn't ignored but deliberately applied

Expect Maliki to request Iranian ground troops since his are running away.

There are reports Iranian forces are already in Tikrit. It is also reported that Iran has stated it will bomb any forces that come within 100km of its border and has pledged to defend Shia holy sites and cities. Can't see them sitting back and letting the nutters trash Karbala and Najaf.

Republicans are demanding that Obama order air strikes. We could see the bizarre situation of American air power supporting Iranian troops.

Certainly starting to look as if this is a Sunni uprising rather than just Isis operating in isolation. Reports of fighting on the outskirts of Baghdad with ISF training complexes and the main highway to Baghdad being cut. More ISF forces turning tail if accounts to be believed.

His tweets suggest ISF forces aren't even retreating to hold positions along Baghdad perimeter but are just dissolving.

In that video you posted of troops retreating:

they all look pretty happy about it....

I get the impression that those who joined in the last few years were doing so for the job and not to fight. All the ones prepared to fight joined up early on and many of them killed.

I went to the doctor's the other day. He said "The good news is your cancer has gone. Unfortunately the treatment has given you HIV".

I was really upset and said I didnt want HIV. He took one look at me and said, "You're not telling me you want the cancer back are you?"

True. There is no favourable course of action open to the White House.

i cant see how airstrikes would "help" - it doesnt appear as if theres enough of an ISF to take advantage of the firepower
