Really well paid part-time jobs?

Earning 23k a year on part time hours whilst studying is possible but really hard.
I earn a good wage and really fight to make ends meet each month.

A lot of it is lifestyle choice so I can't moan too much but I would LOVE to be able to work part time (or much more freely) in order to read, study and have adventures :)

I earn much less than 23k doing my job full-time. It is one that you can easily do part-time hours for though (public sector call-centre).

You might need to try to reduce your outgoings a bit (lodger?) or look into courses you could do in the evenings or something.

sorry to say it zenie but much less drugs has gotta be part of this plan if you go through with it :(

The trouble is I'm knackered after work - and you don't get financial assistance if you're doing a degree part-time.

6 numbers would do it  :(

I've reduced my outgoings signifigantly  @ debt

Loan not an option?
I was going to say that. When you're over 25 you get full access to student loans without any of this parents supporting you malarkey, so take advantage of that (about £7k a year iirc) and then you suddenly don't need to earn so much with the rest of your time.

I just sent of an application to be a student too, fwiw :D

Also mate, if you're studying full time then outgoigns will go down anyway... just doing my part-time course I started saving £ (if that makes sense?).

Well I'd have to pay for the first year myself as I've already had one year of funding previously which is a bit of an arse, havent asked if I could start in the second year - not entirely sure what I want to do either  :)

What you applied for dude?

Music Technology Foundation Degree; should be a laff - lots of knobs and sliders to play with :D

Applying for finance is a right pig though:

I got financial assistance for my first OU modules when doing the course in my spare time.

Oh really?

From who? :)

The OU.

They have a financial assistance calculator on their website, you have to do a minimum of 30 credits to get anything and it goes up if you do 60 credits.

cheers I'll have a look!

As it happens, i just got my financial assistance form through for my course that starts in November. If you have any questions about elegibility, i can check what the form says, if the web page i linked above doesnt answer them.

Basically, if you earn less than 15,700 you get all fees paid, and if you earn less than 26,180 you will get a partial award (meaning you will have to contribe a percentage towards the cost).

I have a student loan for my fees of £3k and a student loan for living costs of £3k - where does the extra grand come from?

Incidentally, I do alright on my course;

£3,000 fees (loan)
£3,000 living costs (loan)
£4,500 bursary (mine, all mine)
£800 maintenance grant (mine)
£1,000 uni maintenance grant (mine)

Have to apply for my loans for year 2 soon, so will be interesting to see what I'm entitled to now my husband earns more.

well I need a minimum of 23k to live on a year dunno what that is an hour....

A lot. Even once you take off the student loan you'll still be facing a fair shortfall.

Could you move out of London, is that an option you have?

Failing that you'll have to go to war on your outgoings. I've seen rooms in share houses at £70 a week even in London. Could you face that?

Could you swap your car/tube pass for a bike?

Are you studying in London? The loans are more there.

But not, IMHO, sufficiently more. You get about 7.6k. Should still be doable with vacation work and a Saturday job though.......depending on how much you spend of course.......
