I can’t make up my mind as to if RAYE is good or shit.
I am watching her in concert at the Royal Albert Hall on BBC One.
She is being honest, complaining about everything, and she has just stripped to her underwear.
It’s blues music, jazzy.
She’s no musical genius though.

What has her clothes got to do with her being (or not being) a musical genius?

I think she’s great. She’s got a fantastic voice. She’s a talented songwriter. She’s got substance.

She’s had struggles with misogyny in the music industry. Record companies not taking her seriously as an individual and wanting to dictate her direction. Sexual harassment from producers. She’s fought battles and she’s now making a name for herself on her own terms. And good luck to her.

You don’t enjoy her music? Fine. You don’t have to. But she’s far from “shit”.

While a lot of her recording output is not to my taste, she has an incredible musical talent and after watching her being interviewed by Louis Theroux, I really feel for her.

She's been doing music for several years and it's in the last year or so she's really gone stellar. As danny says, she's a talented songwriter.

And this cover of Running Up That Hill

Sorry...not a fan of her version of Running Up That Hill...imo. her pitch is off from the start..its kind of because of her style...she's sliding and forced and her style is not suitable for the accuracy thats needed for that song. Once you have heard Kate Bush sjng it and then hear this version ..its not good.

I prefer the first video..She sounds a bit like Amy Winehouse at times in the first video. So yeah..she has a definite style and an unusual voice..one that relies on forced notes and sliding. One that has small intervals and a lot of vibrato. She needs to mind her voice cos that forced voice can cause problems with the actual voice.

She has that great bigJazz sound .. I'd like to hear her sing an Ella Fitzgerald song. I wonder if she could effect the nuances Ella could?

I'll listen some more 😊

Slight derail for recommendation, if you like Ella or Sarah Vaughan, check out Samara Joy - another amazing voice.

(Put up some of her stuff on the what are you listening to now thread earlier)

She's actually performing in my town. I'm going to see if I can get tickets, she clearly can put on one hell of a show.

Edit: Damn sold out
