Porter Wagoner RIP

Dubversion

Gorn
Enforced Holiday
Only just found out - cos Mark Lamarr's been on holiday ;) - that the great Porter "The King Of Country Gospel" Wagoner passed away on October 28th.

So this is a very late tribute thread.

In some ways very much perceived as a cheesy Nashville type, but a great songwriter who also discovered Dolly..

He did some right individual stuff too - i think of the opening track on Bottom of The Bottle, and he was doing concept albums about various things before the hippies too.

Have always had mixed feelings about the ole wagonman perecisely cos of that. Did he discover Dolly or did she give his TV ratings a boost? Led to quite a big legal case when she left the show with Porter seeking royalties and such.

I'd heard he'd passed away. (You should listen to Radio Scotland's "Brand New Oprey", Dub). Quite a character. Was listening to his and Dolly's "Last Thing on My Mind" the other day.

And, no...Hank Thompson has passed away. Seemed to be early Nov but only heard about it via the americana boards tonight.
Tomorrow I'll be playing lots of western swing.

There can be no doubt, Wagoner was a giant in that excellent medium known as Country Music.

Now he's off to that Grand Ol' Opry in the sky....:(

Best thing Wagoner did recently was his interview with Borat. He didn't realize it was a put-on.

Never saw that but did catch him a couple of times at the Opry...pure cornball stuff.
Anyway just found that nice Hank Thompson comp I was searching for.:D

After seeing that maybe he's more of a cheeseball than cornball. He didn't even write any of his big hits either iirc. Certainly not Misery or Green Green Grass.
I would love to raid the old git's wardrobe though...Nudie heaven.

Also, as Dub mentioned, Porter was instrumental in bringing Dolly Parton to the world. And imo, a world without Dolly Parton would be a sad place to live.

Anyone who truly loves Porter and especially Dolly, will appreciate a visit to Dolly's theme park, Dollywood. Here is a short video of some young people enjoying themselves at Dollywood.

Visiting a place like this helps one get in touch with true Americana, as well as the grassroots of Country Music.

:D Looks like they visited the bars of Gatlinburg before that!
Pigeon Forge meanwhile is a dry town in more ways than one.

(damn you canuck; i'm supposed to be up early but really into digging out old vids on youtube and am wide awake...jezz...look at this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIUPCfIihQ4 - the original video; never seen it before!)

Twisted, you shouldn't derail. Let's get things back on track with another Porter tune. This one is about good love gone bad; in fact, the poor man in the song ends up in an asylum.

When I used to be feeling poorly, this Porter Wagoner song would go a long way toward cheering me up: Ole Slew Foot. I'm going to listen to it now:(
