Plug covers question

Thank you for your ready help

that's quite all right

seriously, what what said - could be phone (although they aren't usually in twos), aerial / cable TV, or something electric that isn't there any more - i've got a couple of redundant switches in my flat which were to do with the old central heating boiler (it was replaced before I moved in) that i could put blanking plates on if i could be bothered.

think it's relatively unlikely that someone would have just blanked off normal sockets - even if they didn't use them for whatever reason, why not just leave them there? unless the sockets had got damaged in some way.

may be worth unscrewing and looking to see what (if anything) is there (and do it carefully in case there's live cables) but probably better to get someone qualified involved.

Yup, it may not be electrical wiring behind them and if you don’t know how to identify mains wiring, It would be wise to get an electrician in to check it out.

Otherwise, one or two 1-gang sockets should fit no bother.

Although it is unlikely it could be blanked off mains. I blanked off a double socket in my kitchen the smart ass who own the house before thought it was a great idea to put a double socket about 15cm above the sink

Yeh round a mate's flat, landlord wants to put in plugs, well told to by council. Thought this might ease things for him

Quick question - could these covers be removed and a plughole inserted?
Chances are that they're just blanked-off former sockets, but someone with the know-how to be able to trace the wires back to the distribution board would be useful. If it's a "to code" installation, everything's probably fine, but without knowing exactly what's supplying power (if anything) to those sockets, there could be problems (eg wiring that isn't up to supplying the current, or that is bodged on from another circuit, etc).

One possibility (though I'm a bit mystified as to why there are two single plates cheek by jowl) is that it's an outlet for a former storage heater, in which case you'd end up with the intriguing situation where power was only available from a socket installed there between midnight (ish) and 7am. Which wouldn't be a whole lot of use.

There could well be fuck all behind there and a blank plate is the cheapest, easiest way of making good a redundant socket/switch etc.

This could also be likely. There is little reason to get rid of functioning, useful outlets.

The blanks had been hidden behind a painting for 9 years, there's a storage heater on another wall, the building's of 1970s or 1980s vintage, there's a plug for an aerial further up the wall
