PLEASE READ: Image Posting

A quick reminder of this section of the FAQ:
embedded images must not be over 60k (otherwise the board grinds to a halt for those using dial-up connections). If you wish to refer to a large image, write a short description and link to the image. Please respect copyright.
Do note that this doesn't mean that an endless succession of 59K images is okay - it's a rough guideline.

Occasional images relevant to the discussion at hand are of course fine, but in general, please do other users the courtesy of not slowing down their access.

that's not the connection i'd be worried about if I were you!

(whooooooo!)

When you say 'embedded' - do you mean image linking - or uploading

There's a fairly small maximum size on uploading anyway, so that's self-limiting. I mean directly linked images, using IMG tags.

Another thing to remember is that images from major sites often do things like set cookies and log viewer IP addresses, which may disturb some.

Minor technical question...

Does the picture data pass from the linked location through u75 to the end user, or does the end user render the page like normal html, fetching the picture himself?

Only asking, since it means wether a splurge of picture posting affects only the users or U75 itself as well.

No, it doesn't go through the server. The U75 server generates the HTML for the page you are looking at and sends that to you. Your browser then looks at that code, goes to the servers where the images referred to are stored, and gets them from there. (Well, in the case of images which are attached to posts rather than just linked to, that's the same server, but like I said above those have a size limit anyway.)

Basically, picture posting via IMG tags doesn't affect U75 itself, it's just a pain in the arse if you're on dial-up.

Orang Utan's megabyte-busting self portrait on the "post your ugly mug" thread makes even my super-fast 512K broadband connection struggle and splutter :)

I have a snaping fast dsl.

So do I, but there are still some poor, benighted souls using dial-up modems.

I mean it about the images.

Endless successions of cartoons and random pointless images turn threads into farces, as well as making things annoying for anyone still on dial-up.

I'd rather not have to say "no images in P&P" so please don't fill threads full of crap. If you've got nothing to say apart from "I think you suck/your favourite political figure sucks" and you can't even put that into words, just don't post at all.

I don't. This isn't a discussion thread, this is an announcement thread.

If anyone would like the image policy rescinded - which was instituted originally at the insistence of posters to stop threads being derailed, along with the "no song lyrics" rule - they can start a thread in feedback about it.

not a word in there about some decision which may have been made! which is it, a decision made following posters' angry demands for such, or just a reiteration of the faq, only tweaked slightly?

Both. That particular part of the FAQ isn't exactly strictly enforced elsewhere... you may have noticed... in this forum, however, it's stricter.

The song lyrics thing is specific to world pol (and middle east - I think it was instituted before they split).

Maybee the assult weapons ban's wasn't good policy for him.

Those 11 votes would have gave him the election.

Its not a good idea to piss off the NRA, they have way to many swing votes.

Pee..why did you just copy a reasonably large picture that is in the post directly above yours IN an announcement forum about posting large images??...And before you harp on about how someone else posted the image first, don't you think ONE copy of the picture was enough??

I've never met anyone so lazy in my life.
