It didn't occur to you that somebody who played the role of a pensioner, albeit a moderately sprightly one, between 1973 and 2010 might actually be quite old.
Not really, I suppose I just didn't think about it. He could have been like the Corporal Jones character in Dad's army, Clive Dunn was actually not 'pensioner' age.
