Pedestrian killed outside Lambeth Town Hall, helicopter in attendance

AJ pulls his anti-cyclist rant at every chance he gets. It's boring and predictable now. Ignore him.

Nooooo, it's a cry for help. :(

We urgently need more kerbed-in cycle lanes and off-road cycle lanes in London and other busy cities - like this:

They're not wide enough for cyclists to overtake though - as a result I'd far rather not use it than be stuck behind someone piddling along...

Not cycling related, but following the accident last night, I was amazed at the number of people jaywalking/running through really heavy traffic in Brixton this morning in the rush hour. Only takes a couple of minutes to wait for the green man. Surprised more pedestrians aren't run over.

Also always amazed by number of people who stand aimlessly at pelican crossing *without* pressing button - who knows how long they've been there waiting for a gap in the traffic.

Some blame the lorry's
Some blame the cycles
Some might say that the roads are just too full
Some might say it could be down to the population
Only AJ can give us the truth, just like the truths that the bible teaches.

He's a splendid advert for his faith isn't he?

Oh well quite. Why should any lorry driver have adequate mirrors or use them?

The poster you refer to is an utter disgrace and gives lorry drivers carte blanche to kill cyclists. But you're just another tosser who'll lap up any old shit that allows the strong to kill the weak.

please in future engage brain before posting.

Most accidents involving cyclists wouldn't happen if the cyclists didn't weave in and out of traffic and squeeze through gaps sideways between vehicles that they really shouldn't.

Who says they shouldn't?[/QUOTE]i saw a cyclist narrowly avoid riding under the front of a bus yesterday as he weaved, as aj says, in and out of the traffic and onto the wrong side of the road. but i suppose that that's the sort of thing co-op would applaud, people getting on their bike and taking no shit from the motorist man.

"Before"? Oh! I see what you did there. What a clever post.

i don't know what you thought you saw, but it always read 'please engage brain before posting'.

as you'll recall from reading my posts about cyclists, i have nowhere lapped up or encouraged 'any old shit' which allows drivers to top cyclists - assuming that's what you mean by 'allows the strong to kill the weak'. and i'm against euthanasia, in case that's what you meant, though i'm happy to make an exception in your case.

1. Because cycling is better for the environment
2. Because cycling is better for your physical health
3. Because cycling is better for your mental health
4. Because cycling is better for local shops and businesses (ie not big supermarkets with big car parks)
5. Because cycling saves money
6. Because cycling helps you to stay in touch with your local community
7. Because motorists cause busses to require £0.5bn annual subsidy
8. Because if everyone cycled, traffic speeds would increase
9. Because cycling is much less likely to kill anyone
10. Because cycling is better fun
11. Because cycling is quieter
12. Because cycling causes less damage to the roads
13. Because Norman Tebbit advocated it.

Fuck me Im in full agreement with Laughing Toad. Thats a first.:)

We dont know what actually happened in this accident.

The thing is lorries are built in such a way that it is to easy to go under the wheels.

Separate lanes for cyclists only work up to a point. Every time u get to a junction u have to be careful that a car is not turning into the junction.

I dont like this "blindspot" campaign. Lorries could be fitted with cameras linked to screen in drivers cab. Some refuse vehicles have them so driver can see the blindspot at back of vehicle. Its not rocket science.

I think the idea of the campaign is that until such time comes that all lorries are fitted with such equipment, by law or otherwise, it is both unnecessary and dangerous to undertake a lorry in some situations, such as at a junction when the traffic lights are red.

How things should be in an ideal world shouldn't mean it's okay behave as if they were so. There are better ways to campaign for cameras/enhanced mirrors on lorries than putting oneself in danger with those that lack the equipment.

If a lorry is at red light it should be stationary and u should be able to filter in front of it so that it can see u and u can get off the lights quickly.

Here I go between the bus and lorry. :D

Clerkenwell road. The traffic is almost stationary. So its ok to filter through.

seriously? I would sit behind the lorry and be late rather than try and go between it and the bus. It's entering the jaws of death.

But that's the whole point. If there is a junction just ahead, it's not worth the risk and shouldn't be attempted. It's all very well if you know the traffic light sequence well and know for certain you'll clear the lorry before the light goes green. If you don't and the lorry starts moving before you've got yourself well in front you are left in a vulnerable position. It's not worth doing that for the sake of gaining 10 metres (and bearing in mind that in many situations the lorry will simply overtake you moments later anyway).
