I've always preferred Pacino. He's prepared to take on a variety of roles, and hasn't just faded out into really crap parody of himself like De Niro...

too cool for school

i couldnt resist ...lol

i'd err in the direction of pacino. they both have their mugging moments, but i think de niro just coasts on his nasal snort/lip curl/neck rotate thing too much, whereas pacino has reined in the whole SHOUTING = EMOTING shenanigans of late.

of their films of the last ten years, again pacino trumps de niro in terms of flicks i'd rate: 'insomnia', 'donnie brasco', 'city hall', 'any given sunday', 'heat' and 'the insider' up against 'ronin', 'jackie brown', 'cop land', 'heat' and 'casino'...

still enjoy de niro, but just feel he's not adventurous enough in his roles.

...oh, and i'm probably still bitter at having paid out cash money to see 'the fan' (absolute shit) and 'sleepers' (in which he fucked up the dynamic of an otherwise pretty decent movie by, well, just being robert de niro).

I agree. And I also really like "S1M0NE". I know it was critically panned, but it's actually quite a clever satire.

Fortunately I have thus far been spared either of those...

Earlier years I would say that Deniro edged it, in latter years Pacino, but are we talking 'cool' as in image or cool as in movies/performances?

Chet Baker was cooler than the pair of them.

films/performances.

I ought to edit my post to say 'who's better'... :)

i voted for De Niro although he's pretty much lost it lately, just showing up and picking up a paycheck when he was in his day he put more effort than anyone in his roles, the movie "New York New York" he even learned to play the sax, got fattened up for Raging Bull and did real boxing traing, but what reeally impressed me was his role in the Godfather movie, he got the script with all his lines went to Sicily and got a local to read them out and taped him then spent weeks learning the accent, compare that to Pacino's laughable Speedy Gonzalez accent in Scarfare

De Niro, He a better Actor, Director,

watch The Score other night again

And best one out of the two in Heat

Pacino in Carlito's Way and the Godfather were a joy to watch but he is a bit shouty as someone said, as exemplified in Scent of a Woman which was quite dire. Pacino can seem a bit samey.

De Niro seems to play different characters - Meet the Fockers, Raging Bull, Godfather, Midnight Run etc.

Just by a bit.

Think James Woods is a better actor though.

JW - incredible screen presence. Steals every scene in the Virgin Suicides.

Best film I've seen him in: The Hard Way.

Yeah I agree. I think de niro is better when he plays the good guys. He does the gangster thing brilliantly but it's almost too easy for him. He was terrific in A Bronx Tale. :)

De Niro...without doubt. Pacino has never starred in a role as intense or virtuosic as Travis Bickle, Johnny Boy, The Young Vito Corleone, Jimmy Conway, Rupert Pupkin or Michael Vronsky.
