Oh lordy. The wife has said she wants a folding bike

a_chap

When the world came apart, where were you?
She drives to work but parking has become "an issue" therefore she is parking a mile or so away and walking.

Could the massed wise folk of U75 suggest how I may satisfy her (no doubt temporary) folding bike desires at a minimal cost?

Ta.

I am all in favour of getting to work earlier.
  1. you always get to park at work wherever you want
  2. you get to slowly get into the day without hassle from others
  3. you get a reputation for dedication even though it is wholly incorrect
  4. get your emails dealt with before others disturb you
  5. you get more flexibility if you need to take personal time during the day

I'm not sure you can...not with most of the ones that hook over the hatch back or the "boot" as you would call it. when the door is closed I don't see how you would get it off.
With mine all someone has to do it cut two straps with a knife and the whole thing can be lifted off easily.

yeah I was gonna add..they could cut the straps, but wouldn't the rack be useless without them?
Possibly, but first I am not sure your thieving scrote thinks about such things too deeply or it may be possible to repair the strap later and make the rack useable again.

I have left my rack and bike on the back of the car with the bike locked to the rack but I have never really felt comfortable leaving it for more than a short while.

ok, i see your points. fwiw, I left a bike rack on the back of my car, with a bike often on it, for a number of years and nothing happened. then again I wasn't really in major high-theft areas...though not completely theft-free areas either

I wish I felt confident enough about it to do that. Well confident may not be the right word. I used to drive to a place with the bike on a rack, then free the bike so I could cycle onward but I was often not trusting enough to leave the rack on the car, I would often fold it a bit and put it inside on the back seat.

Probably nothing would have happened if I had always left it on the car and that would have been much less trouble for me. Perhaps I am just not very trusting of my fellow humans!

well I guess it depends how nice/ expensive your bike is (and/or your rack) both of mine were el cheapo's

Gone are the days where one could have one's wife committed for such behaviour, unfortunately.

Get one of these instead.

If she gets a folding bike it will fit in the boot. No rack needed. Or failing that it will fit in the back. She is not stupid to judge from this.

well, I suggested it because the OP seems to have something against the idea of his wife getting a folding bike.

That is because he is a proper cyclist who rides an expensive special bicycle. He probably thinks that a folding bike will let down the family image with the neighbours.

Just get a bike rack and a regular bike.

"The" wife.

:(

Indeed. I only have the one wife. If I had more than one I'd have said "A wife wants a folder..." :p

She needs to start arriving at work before the parking spaces are taken, simples!

Trust me, hell will freeze over before wifey (is that better Lizzie?) would start going to work early.

get a bike rack for the car and use a normal bike?

And that's not an option either. Mrs Chap's car is sacrosanct and no bike rack will ever be attached to it. Which is a bit of a shame as I have a brand new bike rack she could use.

On reading your suggestion I wandered to the other end of Chap Mansions to ask her. I got as far as "Why not put the bike rack on your car and..." before she threw her boiled egg at me.

C'est la vie as they say.

The Folding Bike Recommendations sticky would be a fairly good place to start.

What a fine suggestion. Why didn't I think of that?

Sounds a bit as if she might not want to put a wet and or muddy folding bike in her car either!
