Nico - Violent Racist.

why "a European nation"
is racism of people born before 1940 a particular trait of Europeans?

It didn't say that racism was exclusive to Europeans did it ? Why not read the post in it's entirety and try to respond to what it says rather than pick apart individual sentences ?

I always found her fascinating, yet never felt I liked her in the least bit until I read "Nico, Songs They Never Play On The Radio" by James Young, a sort of rock'n'roll Sunset Boulevard and one of the best book about touring and fading celebrity ever written. It's both very funny and ultimately surprisingly touching. I kind of warmed to her a great deal after that and she seemed a bit more human by the end.
.

Hey, I mentioned that book earlier, it's an excellent read isn't it?

Only just spotted that in your post. :)

Yes it's fantastic, beautifully written and one of the best biographies I've ever read. Even someone with no interest in Nico would enjoy this. I liked how the writer (who was one of the members of her touring band for the last ten years of her life) started being far from impressed, almost mocking her and her coterie and then he slowly comes round to liking and feeling quite protective towards her by the end.

I once saw Nico live at the Derngate Centre in Northampton (sometime in the 80s). It wasn't even in the main auditorium but in the room they reserved for local bands in the building's basement! Me and my mates were all Velvets fans and until we were actually sitting there watching her perform didn't really believe she'd turn up. I mean, what the fuck would Nico want to play a cellar in Northampton for?!?

I liked this quote from the article linked to...

She didn't bother with neurosis, she went straight to psychotic.

Im a big VU + also Nico fan - and although this story is sad, I take it more as psychotic behaviour than racist - she's clearly nuts and could have done something to anyone of any race and been equally insulting. She may well have been racist, but the whole appeal of artists like Nico is that they are damaged goods somehow managing to stay alive to put out new material

I saw her supporting Siouxsie and the Banshees at Cardiff Top Rank. She bravely endured a hail of bottles for about 30 minutes. Then one hit her in the face and she had to leave the stage. Very brave if you ask me.

but obviously very shit live:p

Absolute rubbish, yes. Just sat there with some little keyboards, droning away. I'd have thrown a bottle myself if I'd been old enough to drink.

It certainly can be related. IMHO.

What I mean to say is that there are many musicians who are Conservative supporting or Republican supporting in the case of the US. I dislike this politics intensely but I still like the music regardless.

e.g Ian Curtis was a Conservative supporter, Frank Black is an ardent Republican supporter.

I've just finished songs they never play on the radio again I'm in a totally different place than I was when I read it some years ago.As has already been said junkies are so self absorbed (not a judgemental comment) They don't care about owt else than the next straightener. But having said that i like to be around intersting people,I'm not keen on getting physically hurt but it does happen so I can almost understand that and sorry but I love her voice. I can only play vu on me own cos all i get is whats this racket oh well. You've got to feel sorry for someone whose circumstances mean they have to live up to their image. Ah poor sid

TBH it sounds like she hated herself and hated black people enough to glass one of them for nothing.....

Racism is very commonplace, and not just white v non white either.

Are you saying only damaged people are racist?

No of course not

From some of the earlier posts and the little I already knew about Nico it seems highly likely that she was very damaged, suffering from PTSD, self medicating with drugs, etc.

I think in that sort of situation people are more likely to make a display of their racism (or any other ism) than people who are less damaged and who might be more self-controlled and be able to either be conscious of their racism and question it or just be better at hiding it from themselves and others.

Yes rational thought and all that.. But tis possible to be damaged and not rascist

Surely there are plenty of things that could be construed as racist that could also be construed as rational?

See what you mean! Clearly organised racism is a different ball game.

OK. People that wish their children to marry only certain specific catchment of people for cultural reasons. Is it rational? Is it racist?
