I am a bit surprised there wasn't a thread on this already (unless I missed it) but what with the recent announcement here is one.

Plenty of info all over the place on the new Rosebank oil field being given the go ahead. At least this link has a nice picture of a ship to lessen the depressing blow of impending doom it all represents.

Absolutely not a done deal yet given there inevitably will be a court challenge. I think the government will struggle to show how this is compatible with net zero / the climate change act - and the government's recent actions will have made this case harder to argue in court. By rolling back / delaying various policies the maths will already be harder to make work, without rosebank on top.

I think there’s no thread because what is there really to say? It’s not controversial to note that there is no justification for continued exploration and development of new oil fields. No long-term economic justification, even, let alone moral or political justification. It’s a short-terminated cash grab done because the decision makers don’t need to give a fuck what anybody else thinks.
