Sky News is reporting at this moment that a Loud Boom has been heard in the US capital Washington DC but also say no threats at this time?

Called it right away, spent my early years living next to an RAF base where they did a lot of test flights for fighter jets and Concorde, I know what it sounds like :)

No idea if this is relevant, but the owner of the firm that owns that aircraft is (according to Google) quite a senior person in the NRA.

The new owner? Reports say the plane changed hands 5 days ago. Reports also say the cockpit appeared to be unmanned.

Or suicide by autopilot / wing leveller on ( or just decent trim) opening the door and sliding out. 🙁

THE NRA woman. Barbara Rumpel, who I'm sure none of us would of mourned the loss of, was not on the private jet, unfortunately her daughter and two-year-old granddaughter were, alongside the toddler's nanny and pilot.

US were very quick to say they didn't shoot it down. Now they're admitting firing flares "to try and attract the attention of the pilot". Which is probably standard, though I'd have thought a supersonic jet flying a few feet past me might attract my attention.

Anyway, fully expecting Trumpian conspiracy of "Biden kills babies".

thoughts and prayers is about all I can muster for Babs

Can you shed any light on why the Cessna might have done a 180 A380 ? I mean it did do a 180 but why? That wouldn't be auto-pilot would it? And I'm fairly sure it had attracted attention before it did that (prepared to be corrected).

Latest theory is 'sudden loss of cabin pressure'.

Could be loads of reasons, if it was just trimmed well it would hold its altitude but could wander about. If it had a simple autopilot then that has a heading ‘bug’ on the Direction indicator which could be set anywhere and a pilot who was becoming incapacitated could engage the auto pilot which would then turn to whatever heading the bug was on. But these are all guesswork.

The flares seem to indicate the intercepting aircraft got close enough to see someone in the cockpit who then didn’t respond to radio or visual identification requests. Sounds like pilot incapacitation, either medical, heart attack or stroke etc, or loss of consciousness if pressurisation or piped oxygen went at altitude. But this again. I’d just wild guessing on my part.

It’s also how John Denver died.

(Although it wasn’t in a jet plane.)
