MS Outlook and SharePoint trainer?

friendofdorothy if you want any help, ping me a message.

I've been working with SharePoint in just about all its varieties since it first launched. I run a SharePoint support team. I even have the word "SharePoint" in my job title

SharePoint's a fantastic product if you know how to use it. Most people (especially some of those people above!) don't know how to use it or what it's capable of doing.

Yes, Microsoft do sometimes appear to go out of their way to make simple things harder than they should be but, you know... plus ça change
Ok. So SharePoint can be used for many things, but I'm assuming your trying to use it like a shared hard disk?

Do you have to use the web versions of Excel and Word. Happy to help you with these, but unless whoever is paying you is a proper cheap skate, you can download the latest versions as part of the 365 license and work locally as your more used to. On the latest word and excel you click file and there's an option to share. If you can't use the desktop software, I'm happy to help work it out with you.
Are either of you in South London? I think I will need to do this in person on my own device for it to really help me?

That

That too.

There are some great resources on YouTube (with new videos coming out every few days) but many of them assume you have a certain level of knowledge. It is hard if you're a complete beginner.

I also suspect that friendofdorothy doesn't need to learn sharepoint. She just needs to learn how to complete certain tasks.

Sadly I'm in Manchester, but might still be able to help.

Can you find out what license your organisation is paying for so we can find out if you can install the latest office on you PC.

Yes. But a basic understanding of the system, symbols, menus terminology etc is definitely needed

Probably a stupid question but how would I find that out? Were would that info be? (Stored on SharePoint perhaps ha ha!) As I said the person who set up the system has left us.

When you are "in" SharePoint, do you see your profile pic on the right-hand side of the toolbar? (circled in red)

If you do, click it then click "View account"

You'll see a bunch of stuff, find and click view under "Subscriptions"

What is the first line under "Licences"?

Not in it on this device but will check when I can next time. Thank you

I’m trying to save you £400 which you do not need to spunk on learning fucking Outlook.

Read the thread eh? fod specifically says "Don't tell me to Google it" and
The job before was just about to introduce a MS system but then the plague saw me furloughed. For a decade before that I was in a role that didn't didn't use the internet. So I have missed out on the incremental stages of software. The web based MS software is a million miles away from what I was used to last century.

I've been to a few free support sessions for older people using computers. Including course on Google software which really helped so I know how to file, find and share Google docs hooray!. But they don't cover MS software or SharePoint.

I have no one I can ask on a day to day basis. Or at all. It makes me feel so isolated and old.

Wind your fucking neck in.

friendofdorothy I'm not in South London either or I'd be right round, but trust me on this, if you can learn the Google docs stuff you can learn the MS stuff. Take up a_chap 's offer and if you'd just like a sounding board or some moral support, PM me.

I am lucky enough to have had the incremental stages you talk about above, so I'm a confident user of SharePoint and Outlook (and so much more) without really understanding a single fucking thing about how they work. SharePoint isn't as scary as it seems, honestly.

I'd be concerned about this point. Who does have access to it? At least one person should have an admin account (ideally with another break glass). Your organisation could be in a bad place if you get locked out

Do we think some books like these might be useful for the OP? I'm not recommending them as I haven't read them and other providers' books might be better but this range is very popular and for a reason.

Obvs youneed to buy the right book for the right version of Outlook installed (if not only using the web version).

This'd cost you about £40 in total, you'd have a 'course' in your hand and access to the books/info whenever you need them.

Just a thought.

Not my own money and £400 is not nearly enough for proper training, which I think under our own rules, the charity has a duty to provide for me. So far as a charity we have spent nothing on improving our own skills or accessibility. Improving my skills to fulfill my role is not a waste of money. It's taken over two years of asking for help to even get this meagre budget.

Like many people, especially people of my age, I have never managed to learn anything really useful from a fucking YouTube video. I know I learn best in person where I can ask questions.

Think I'm using the web version. Is there much difference?

yes. having 'one person departments' is never a good thing. i used to handle most of the online stuff for a charity, but did occasionally give the treasurer a sealed envelope with current passwords etc - although with some of them moving on to two factor authentication that wasn't good enough for all of them.

then they went and died suddenly and i'm not quite sure if all the financial stuff has been sorted out fully a year or so on...

Different interface, seems to have fewer whistles and bells in my experience.
I don't like the web version.

Do you access email through a browser or are you opening up a program called Outlook?
Think I'm opening it through a browser but I'm not at all sure what I'm doing. Someone talked me through step by step starting off via zoom during lockdown but I had no idea what I was doing and I can't recall any details now. Don't recall installing outlook on my laptop.

Recently managed to log on via my Chromebook - so that I's definitely web based.

I regret starting this thread as I feel overwhelmed and panicky by everything atm. I'll revisit the whole idea when I feel calmer with more head space. I'm not in a good frame of mind for learning anything right now

Thank you for all the kind offers of help so far. Much appreciated.

No worries. PM me if you want to arrange a screen share session to discuss, point at things on screen, ask questions etc

SharePoint is complex. Outlook less so. Often a short conversation about this kind of things yields better results that the back and forth you have on a forum like this. With the best of intentions, on both sides, it's difficult to know what people mean, want, etc

Anyway, gimme a shout if you want 👍

I did the Google training with them. They don't do ms training. They have drop ins but it's hot and miss with trainers knowledge/ time available, they have helped with outlook.
Are you still looking for someone? I'm very good with MS Office, business admin, and setting up and explaining all manner of SaaS (software as a service

I've managed one session on outlook at a drop on where there was only two of us there. So that has helped me sort out !y inbox and label and file things. Not yet got to grips with my address book and groups / lists.

I've also got a friend who is prepared to help with share point. But I think I will need more than a couple of sessions.

One session on each bit of office would be best.

Are you in south London? I don't think remote sessions will help me I need someone who can see were things are on my screen and tell me in person. That's how I learn best.

It's not just outlook, and I've spent lots of time and effort working with people who need a good teacher with enough business experience to not just teach them about Microsoft 365, but to also help them identify other areas that can tie in with the training to create a solution that teaches the client and/or his employees to make the most out of the latest developments in cloud software.

I wouldn't use up all of the budget without also providing the correct number of hours from myself.
