morrissey - the writing's on the wall

Nah, there's a lot of very bleak humour in the music of The Smiths and Morrissey.
I still find it hard to reconcile the sometimes-beautiful lyrics of The Smiths with the prize dickhead that Morrissey has become. And they were far from miserable too. There's plenty of humour to be found in the lyrics.

This is just wondrous stuff:

Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people
And I want to see life
Driving in your car
Oh, please don't drop me home
Because it's not my home, it's their home
And I'm welcome no more
And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine
Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I don't care
I don't care, I don't care
And in the darkened underpass
I thought, "Oh God, my chance has come at last"
But then a strange fear gripped me
And I just couldn't ask
As is this:
Spending warm summer days indoors
Writing frightening verse
To a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg

M. is hardly the first or only creator of enjoyable art, who personally is a total cock. There are dozens, if not hundreds .. and that's in case most 'artists' aren't actually insufferable shits in person, which they (we) probably are.

We enjoy art despite our favourite artists' personal failings and foibles, generally, not because of. And at least this one's not a nonce or a rapist.

Loads of great gags in Cohen's songs.

Nick Cave, now there's a miserable fucker. The only joke with him is the fact he doesn't get how ridiculous his schtick is.

Oh. My. God! He is such a po-faced twunt! The Red Hand Gang is the name of his email stuff where he replies to people not as good as him. He does write good movies though.

Any of them stirred up racial hatred during a particularly difficult period of history that already had loads of people doing said stirring?

I think this is crediting Morrissey with a little too much reach / push among anyone but beer-bellied, greying indie fans who either don't care about his stupid views, or are themselves now grown up social conservatives with a little frosting of right on because they have gay mates (or are gay) or live in a muticultural area without discomfort.

And there's always Bowie and the fascist thing in the 1970s (which were hardly trouble-free in the UK). And oh I don't know, Sid Vicious with his swastika. It's all a bit stupid, Morrissey is a bit stupid and honestly, some gammon waving a flag and grumping about immigration .. I'm more worried about performers singing about illuminati and NWO stuff, that shit sadly resonates way more with The Kids these days than immigration and flags, IMO at least.

Leonard Cohen was a published poet and novelist before he went into music. Neither Nick Cave, nor this "Morrisey", are fit to sharpen his pencils.

At least half, if not more of the outrage over the behaviour of this "Morrisey" is just the bleating of middle-aged people pretending that if their teenage idol is still relevant, even if in a bad way, then they themselves must still be relevant.

Thanks for your opinion. And while I can acknowledge his talent (although I care little for his dreary music), Cohen's words say nothing to me about my life.

Psychology!

And before them, TS Eliot and Ezra Pound and the like. At least there's no Casa Morrissey yet.

I'm deeply ambivalent about Nick Cave, but I quite like his novels. On the other hand, I've never read any of Leonard Cohen's poems or novels. How do you explain that one, eh?
