More police brutality than you can shake a stick at.

Somewhat tangentially, i've been thinking some of these US TV Cop reality tv shows, series and movies, which seem deeply embedded in their culture and which seem to be predicated on all manner of assumptions about 'law enforcement' and how it should be both perceived and enforced. Perhaps they serve to some degree to help normalise all those tropes about cops who 'push the boundaries' but ultimately catch the 'bad guys,' inculcating the unspoken understanding that it's necessary to be the biggest shark in the pool, ultimately for the greater good. Makes me wonder if they have to some degree (and not diminishing all the other problems with US cops by any means) exacerbated the day-to-day grim inevitability of cop violence as a means to an end in a (perceived to be) very violent culture. I guess, like debates around other aspects of a culture, they simultaneously reflect and amplify negative aspects. More broadly, one things for sure - US cops need a massive 're-set,' which, amongst other things i suspect is unlikely to happen whilst their 'union' effectively shuts down any criticism of these type of interactions (not to mention police gangs) and also whilst every person they deal with is potentially armed to the teeth.
It surely also does the job of reinforcing what a big scary world it is out there and the only people who can protect you from all this danger are the cops. So the rapid militarisation of the police is supported without question by many people, alongside general unfaltering support for these brave defenders.

Meet the Late Tyre Nichols, who was stopped by police for reckless driving on his way to a local park in Memphis on 7 January 2023 ...

... as a result of this contact with the police, Mr Nichols died on 10 January 2023 from cardiac arrest and kidney failure.

An attorney for Mr Nichols' family said at a press conference. 'It was an unadulterated, unabashed, nonstop beating of this young boy for three minutes.'

(From left) Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills, Jr, Emmitt Martin III, Justin Smith and Tadarrius Bean, all of whom joined the Memphis Police Department in the last six years, were fired last week after an investigation found them to be "directly responsible for the physical abuse of Mr Nichols".

All of them have now been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression.

"Black Lives Matter"?

I watched the vid with subtitles - it was horrible. What seems to happen is that, in the middle of pepper spraying him, one of the cops gets accidentally sprayed, steps away, gets angry then sets upon him with a baton. Afterwards, all the cops stand about trying to get their stories straight and almost trying to justify what they’ve just done (while the poor fella lies in the gutter behind them. Absolutely sickening.

They all are. Fucking freaks. I haven’t watched it because I know the script and I will get upset on behalf of all people who have experienced this shit. I have my own video of myself and a girlfriend getting beaten by securicor supplied private thugs in Sweden. In handcuffs getting my head smashed off a door. Taken round the back of the buildings to do god knows what. So you start shouting whatever will draw crowd.
Fucking polis then blamed us watching the videos for making a noise. Prosecutor said it was too dark to see.
I can’t watch another video of these cop scum brainwashed fucking robots being violent.
People say you have to see the human behind the uniform. Because they just following instructions as they constantly tell us.

I mean I love the skate vid and photography and all that sort of stuff, and understand why people are emphasising this was a ‘good kid’ and making tributes. At the same time I have a bit of reservation about creating a story of him not deserving this because he was ‘one of the good ones’, because the bad kids, substance abusers and general scumbags don’t deserve to be beaten to death by cops either.

Pushin the boat out here. Blaming white supremacy for this latest heinous crime. I mean. I hate the fucking police as much, or more, than most people. But I don't think white supremacy can be to blame here.

University of Memphis professor, Darron, Smith warns that the body-camera footage of the police lynching of Tyre Nichols can trigger post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms for Africans in America (and presumably elsewhere) who watch the video:

And also African-Americans who have been beaten up by the police in the past, I expect.

And I would very much like to share the videos I have, which is in high contrast to the constant copaganda in Swedish and Danish media. However I was asked to leave it, because it happened in a small city and through her work, she comes into contact with the police.
I have seen many times the police to be bullies. I can’t watch the videos lest I be consumed by anger on behalf of this man.

Meet the Late Anthony Lowe Jr. a 36-year old father-of-two and double amputee (who reportedly lost the lower halves of his legs after a past altercation with police in Texas) ...

... on 26 January 2023, he was shot at least 8 times and killed by police officers from Huntington Park Police Department, California "as he tried to run away from them on his stumps" by "using his arms to propel himself along the ground" after jumping out of his wheelchair.

The Late Mr Lowe was reportedly in possession of a large knife and had allegedly stabbed someone prior to the arrival of the police, who handcuffed him as he lay dying in the street. There are claims that he may have been suffering from a mental health crisis at the time that he was shot by the police.

From the initial stop and how heavy handed and aggressive they were, the copper not being able to keep up on the chase - which goes someway to answering roid usage, any roid user I've know have absolutely no stamina. The bastard holding him up when punching him, the bastard who got maced by his colleague then got vexed and started using his stick - just no need whatsoever. I felt so sorry for Tyre to be going through that

I've long thought that the main factor guiding police treatment of the public outside of misogyny is Class/social position.
Perhaps not In the USA where Racism is probably equally to blame (IMO).

In my experience It regularly shows itself in discussions with well off/ socially secure mid/upper class people who genuinely see the Police as a force for good as they've never experienced how they treat people of lower class.

"Protection of the wealthy, defence of privilege" has always been the most memorable line from a Crass song to me

P.S. I've never met a straight pig
