Silva - i've got to say well done & congrats to Nelson Evora for becoming the Mens Triple Jump champion. And of course to add to the World title he won last year in Osaka. I believe he's Portugal's first Olympic track & field gold medal in 12 years i.e. since Fernanda Ribeiro winning the womens 10,000m in Atlanta with a stunning sprint finish.
I just knew that when Evora got back into the lead with 17.67m. He would win the gold medal. Because i knew that Odwu couldn't produce a jump of around 17.80-90m jump that would have been enough to win it. Thus his inablility to porduce jumps when it mattered came back to haunt him. Evora's reaction of tears of joy & disbelief that he beat the favourite
As for Odwu i watched his reaction after his final jump and he was totally gutted as well as dejected. He was confident & convinced that he was going to win his first global title - it was a bit deja vu to Atlanta 96.
Especially since Jonathan Edwards whilst leading for most of the competition (in gold medal position) lost to Kenny Harrison in the final jump of the competition, thus hopped, skipped & jumped to an Olympic Record 18.09m (i think the second or third longest jump ever).
But that defeat made Edwards more determined to go one better, thus winning the T.Jump title in Sydney 2000. As already mentioned Edwards won it when he was 34 years old. Hopefully Phillips can take encouragement from that and succeed in 2012.
