GP surgeries have to release copies of their patient notes to the patient unless it would significantly harm their health by doing so. You'd expect to find copies of all the referrals (letters) to medical consultants together with their replies plus a print out of a summary of each visit plus what's been prescribed. Your mate would have to do this himself though, but the sooner he gets on to that the better.
