Make-up for 50+ women?

AnnO'Neemus

Is so vanilla
I had my face made-up by a beauty counter in a department store recently, and wasn't really happy with the result. For one thing, I'm 50+ and the assistant used powder eye shadow with a shimmer to it, and I very vaguely reading a while ago that that wasn't the done thing for more mature complexions. I have a few lines/wrinkles under my eyes, and the powder seemed to settle in the creases and highlight them in a bad way.

The assistant steered me into a 'natural' make-up look, but tbh, I reckon I could've done a similar job. I was really disappointed and I even wondered if she was a properly trained MUA or just someone who happened to be working on a make-up counter.

What do I need to ask for, in terms of make-up styles?

It's difficult, isn't it, when you don't know exactly what you want but know you don't want that. I remember getting my make up done years ago as part of a hen night, in a very cool make up place in Covent Garden; lots of my friends got given a different look than what they'd usually wear, whereas the MUA that did my bestie and I was more conservative. In a salon full of all kinds of gorgeous products and shades, she gave me brown eyeshadow ffs. Anyone could do that! I ended up having to ask for something a bit more interesting.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is it depends a bit on the MUA you get, but also how free they feel to experiment with you. What is it you're looking for, an update to your usual look or something completely different?

Which counter was it AnnO'Neemus ? I've found MAC people pay attention to my questions and wants and not afraid to go bold, even for crones like me.

BTW ELF do some no-budge eye crayons which are cheap and come in all sorts of colours, they don't 'settle' into creases but stay all day.

Let me know, I've given up wearing make up, apart form a bit of lipstick... I don't look great without makeup but look worse with it!

I also had a couple of good experiences at MAC shops: helpful without being judgy!

Can also vouch for the ELF sticks. Far more staying power than powder and don’t crease up my eyelids.

I generally don’t like interacting with staff on makeup counters because I feel uncomfortable doing anything that involves ‘beauty’, even though I wear makeup every day. The worst experience I ever had was on a Benefit counter, where a woman offered to give me the smoky-eye look. She applied liberal amounts of concealer underneath my eyes and created crow’s feet where they had not been before. I walked away from the counter looking 40 years older 😆
