Low-alcohol and alcohol-free beer recommendations

Half-Mast-Thumbnail.jpg

Not quite alcohol free, but a genuinely lovely IPA at 2.8%.

Becks Blue is the best I've tried. The Erdinger has an odd taste, not bitter enough as someone else has said. An odd sweetness or syrup thing going on.
Same with 0% San Miguel.

Becks blue or bitburger for me too.

San Miguel is fine.

Bavaria isn't good; cobra is heinous (malty).

I liked the Canarian beer - Dorada sin - but I doubt you'd get it anywhere here.

If you want beer, jut drink actual beer.
Or something completely different like a nice dandelion and burdock or a hot Vimto.

I like becks blue and very rarely drink any more - special occasions only. In fact I prefer non alcoholic beer to real beer now as I can just taste the alcohol. When I do have a drink I prefer wine.

I fear you may have missed the point slightly...;)

I'm seeking to extend my dry January a bit, and it's getting very dull drinking regular soft drinks.

I don't need to get drunk, but I do like the taste of proper beer. It would be nice if there were a non-alcoholic way of drinking nice tasting beer.

It's Beck's Blue right? That's the winner, we all know it. They are all shit, but its the least shit, by a long, long way.

Anyway, as others have said, get creative, drink things that aren't beer at all.

My fav is a pint of Orange Juice and Coke. Pref Orange juice with bits. Gives it body, makes it last, not something you chug. And surprisingly tastes great. Yes, really.

After two and a half years of no alcohol, I very rarely drink alcohol free beers. Generally I try to drink in pubs that sell brews, or I drink tonic water with bitters, or just plain soda water with whatever citrus fruits they have sliced on the back bar.

When pregnant I found becks blue ok. I sometimes added a squeeze of lime. Sainsburys do an ok alcohol free cider. It's sweeter I'd like but alright.

I went for alcohol beers as I don't like drinking sweet out fruity things all evening and want cold drinks. Even tonic water and ginger beer are too sweet.

Is that draft or bottle? Most times I go to the pub these days I seek out the lowest strength ale like Greene King at 3.6% I'd like to try something lower even.

Draft.

Only seen in one pub, one week. Small local brewer (Siren Craft) made it as a one off brew. All their beer is gorgeous.

But "session" beers with a lower alcohol level are starting to appear amongst the craft/IPA/Saison crowd.

Tiny Rebel do "One Inch Punch" a lovely 3.something% IPA.

Brooklyn do a great session saison - "1/2 Ale", again 3.something %.

Founders do an "all day IPA" which is around the 4% mark iirc.

I used to really enjoy the low ABV beers. The tiny rebel mentioned is lush, and of all breweries, Caledonian do a nice one (or did at least - it doesn't seem to be listed on their website)

I kind of hoped that the lower duty payable on low ABV beers might result in the saving being passed on to the drinker, and encourage more people to drink them (and hence increase their availability), but that didn't appear to happen to any significant degree IME. shame really.

Well Brixton Tesco has an outstanding range of alcohol free beers, at least for anyone who finds the number 3 outstanding...

Have bought some of that Becks Blue stuff, on the basis that it appears to be the least worst for many people.

I might try launching my own version of the X Prize competition: Anyone can enter, no rockets required, just invent a proper nice tasting alcohol free beer that actually tastes vaguely of beer. Can't quite stretch to a million dollar prize, but have got £4.50 in loose change.

Been drinking a bit of the Bavaria recently. Its not as bad as The Guardian make out. They do a Wit version too, kinda like an alcohol free Hoegaarden or something. Its okay. A bit sweet. But something a bit different.

re: the OP: there's various drinkable wheat beers - the Erdinger is the most widely available, and is pretty nice. Schnieder-Weisse and Maiselweisse (sp?) are both ok too. Most of the lagers are rank, but I didn't mind the Krombacher and the Bitburger.

Don't try any of the wines.
I was passing Borough Market last week and popped into Utobeer to check out their selection.

I liked the Maiselweisse but wasn't keen on the Schneiderweisse - but it might just reflect a different style of weissbier that I don't like as much.

I also finally tried Nanny State and really enjoyed it.

Was at the soft opening of a friend's café recently and tried some of the other half's nanny state. Was OK, but got the impression it would have been a drag to drink more than one.

Still maintain that thistly cross low alcohol (0.5% rather than 0.05%) elderflower cider is one of the better options.

There's also a painfully hip local company up here doing "grown up pop" or whatever they call it on their social media bumf. Cucumber and fennel seed is my fave, but the Thai Basil and... something is nice too.

Edit: rhubarb. That Basil and rhubarb.

After almost 2 years of Becks Blue it was fucking nectar! I only had one though.

I partake of the Sainsburys Czech low alcohol lager sometimes, it's watery but passable. Haven't seen the thistly cross but will keep my eyes open for it.

Are you sure you really want a pretend beer? My own tipple when I did a few months off was lime and soda (down the pub). But sugary, but that was my thing. Personally I hate the 'fake' stuff, wine beer or otherwise.

Good luck though. Waking up *every* single day clear headed was a revelation.
