London pirate radio - news and discussion

I know Amhurst Road but I've not heard anything about it being haunted!
There is an old churchyard from the 19th century at one end of the road, now a recreation/park space.

I know this thread is about London pirate radio, but in Leeds we had pirate radio too, and the biggest, most impactful station was Dream FM.
Check this oral history:

What are the good stations now in London? I'm in SE16. I haven't had much joy finding anything decent.

Hmm, not bad maybe my setup needs upgrading!

I only listen to stations which have actual DJs live. There are a million and one stations with just a server playing mixes, but I need to know someone is literally controlling turntables live to get me to stick around.

ive tried and tried again but new Rinse Kool is shit. rip kool
The app or the new DJs? There's a fair few of the old crew on there and others playing similar stuff. Not the same I agree but I've gone the other way - have found plenty of decent sets on the app and enjoy the on demand part of it.

new djs and overall lack of vibe

a radio station is like a family, a family of DJs and Listeners. With 24/7 streaming the odd pre-recorded shows fair enough but until the take over Kool was very much a live station. Like skycraper says thats what its all about. Thats the heart and soul of a station

a lot of the new DJs Ive heard have been playing shit tunes and bringing a shit vibe too - a world away from the atmosphere of Kool.... why bother calling it Kool...its so blatantly Rinse...and I dont really like Rinse that much

and yeah on demand shows you can get many a place online.

I also appreciate I am getting older and hard to please, it is what it is, but what it is most certainly isn't Kool, and I miss it

On my current favourite station Venture you get regular listeners shouted out from the via shout box - Lady Pearl! Randy Two Shades! Always locked....I love these people :D Thats what it should be ...a community, silent listeners and all. And regular as clockwork sets. DJs with personality and love for what they do. Having a regular weekly live show at the same time is important I think - the regularity brings familiarity.

Occasional listeners parties! Ive been to a few Kool ones over the years (including Kools first birthday in 92!) . There would be zero point in doing that with this Rinse Kool. It would just be Another Night.

Don't disagree. As you say, they're just moving with times and going for a new audience - same way I don't have an FM radio any more so am happy to stream. But agree it's not the same. Uncle Dugs keeps that community spirit at least.

Exactly. It's live DJs with personalities and the community of other listeners getting shout outs that make a station. You can't create that sort of vibe with a automated server running playlists - even big commercial stations have lost their edge that way.

It's live DJs with personalities
also while im moaning dance music has gone from faceless techno bollocks (when dj were djs lol) to superstar dj thing at the top end and now every up and coming dj has all these promo photos and insta posing and so on - i absolutely hate the self-promotion, posing and notion of what being a dj is to such people. i could say this more eloquently but you know what im getting at . a lot of djs out there come across as ...unlikeable...pirate radio was a bit of a separation from that world --- head down djs with talent and passion.
...and theres a class aspect to this all too...

streaming instead of FM isnt a problem, its the live thing above all else, and the cut of the jib of the DJs.
Underground Bass is my favourite from the DnB related....quality of DJs has dropped a bit since the Kool sell off with a few good names lost but its still very much a live community pirate station

yeah, it's basically personality/social media profile first, music second nowadays. not unrelated to the whole live streaming, DJ staring at the camera thing. sadly it's now just what many young people expect.

BTW anyone looking for a rasta roots reggae radio streamed station this is excellent - best Ive found
mainly euro presenters
Ras Kayleb from CH1 on at 9pm tonight tho
