London in the 1970s

I remember those. They were huge (or maybe they just seemed huge because I was a child) :D

I remember you didn't have to pay to use the loos back then either

Thank god someone else does. I tried Googling for them after posting that, just got lots of adverts for platform scaels

This one I find fascinating, the proximity of all that empty space, like wasteland next to such iconic landmarks as St. Pauls and Tower Bridge. Amazing.

Great picture, see the chimney of the power station that is now the Tate Modern in action.

I seem to remember them at either Fenchurch or Liverpool Street against a far wall facing as you came off the train

I've found these, but I seem to remember much bigger ones, and am not sure they were all red

Anyone remember the double decker trains that ran on the Southern Railway routes through London Bridge to the southeast? That was back in the 50s.

I know of them, but don't remember them - there was only one 8 car train (2 x 4 car units) of it built, and they could only run between London and Dartford, and I think even then only via some but not all of the possible routes.

I remember Dad mentioning that he did travel on them occasionally - they were in service until 1971 and he commuted from Lewisham at the time. Two of the carriages are still in existence.

I can remember taking a girl to watch Grease at a Cinema that was opposite Rochester station, and on the way back to rainham we were in a carrage that had individuale compartments. In the time it took to get to Rainham we maneged to have sex as no one could walk through......Bring back the seventies.

On the riverbank in that photo (centre) is a sand wharf and concrete plant, I was manager there in 1989 when it closed and was demolished for housing!

Still used to see loads of empty wasteland in the Eastend (what looked like remainders from WWII bombsites) on the London to Southend lines in the 70s
